Job Description

  • GENERAL SUMMARY

  • The CPES (Wound and Ostomy Care) is responsible for providing expert knowledge in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of skin, wound and ostomy care needs. As a clinical expert, educator, consultant, and researcher, the WOC nurse plays a pivotal role in the guidance of optimal patient care. Reports to department leadership.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides expert knowledge in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of skin, wound and ostomy care needs.

  • Establishes and maintains practice standards of care and clinical competencies for pressure ulcer prevention and wound/ostomy management; provides education and consultation for management of complex wound and ostomy patients.

  • Takes a leadership role in the evaluation and implementation of clinical products in the organization.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or a Registered Nurse holding a valid compact state license.

  • Active certification with the Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Certification Board as a CWCN, CWON, or CWOCN.

  • CPR training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.

  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Master's degree in nursing is required. May consider a BSN for internal nurse candidates with applicable experience and active enrollment in a master's program within 1 year of completion from date of hire.

  • Two to four years of relevant pediatric / neonatal and wound / ostomy clinical experience preferred.

  • In-depth knowledge of current wound and ostomy practice standards required.

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communications skills in order to foster collaboration with other members of the health care team.

  • Must provide record of completed diploma (or equivalent) or academic transcript for those areas performing complexity testing.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Expected to work in a patient care environment with minimal exposure to environmental hazards such as, but not limited to, excessive noise, dust, or extremes in temperatures. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
