Overview
Operational Accounting is a team within Corporate Accounting under the Finance umbrella at Navy Federal Credit Union. We work in collaboration with groups in and out of Corporate Accounting to produce accurate financial statements, complete accounting analyses, and support optimization and technology initiatives. The Operational Accounting team is responsible for posting journal entries to the general ledger, reconciling account balances, and researching account variances on daily and monthly cadences. We also work with internal and external auditors to ensure that Navy Federal follows Generally Accepted Account Principles (GAAP). We are a cross-functional team working from both Vienna and Pensacola locations together as one team.
We are seeking a driven individual eager to gain real-world business experience focused on accounting, data analytics, and reporting. Through the support of Navy Federal's Operational Accounting team, this position will provide an opportunity to gain valuable insight and application of various accounting guidance in the financial services industry, including an understanding of Navy Federal's business, technology, resources, and procedures.
Potential Projects:
Internal Control over Financial Reporting (ICFR) and Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) control documentation
Process improvement opportunities and automation initiatives
Analytics reporting for key business insights and drivers
The Summer Associate Program is a 12-week internship program beginning in May 2024 and ending in August 2024. Students will work on impactful projects and meaningful work during their internship. To qualify for this position, applicants must be currently pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university and have an anticipated graduation date of December 2024 or later.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with various levels of staff and management to accomplish assigned tasks/assignments
Support daily tasks, including preparation of accounting entries utilizing integrated general ledger software
Assist with month-end close activities, including journal entries and account reconciliations
Assist with internal and external audit requests
Support organizational risk management and internal control initiatives
Provide professional execution of tasks and special projects while working within established standards, policies and procedures
Support business strategy and initiatives within the business unit and/or across the organization
Maintain professionalism in all interactions, placing member service as priority
Enhance effectiveness of meetings by providing meeting summaries and next steps based on the discussion
Perform research and analysis for certain Navy Federal portfolios, including expanded reporting and data analytics
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Must be pursuing a degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited college/university, and have taken accounting courses
Working understanding of accounting and financial principles
Experience in business and financial analytics preferred
Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
Effective research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Effective spreadsheet software skills
Effective organizational, planning, and time management skills
Effective skill maintaining accuracy with attention to detail and meeting deadlines
Ability to exercise initiative and good judgment to make sound decisions
Ability to adapt to new technologies
Ability to work independently and in a team environment
Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM

Navy Federal is now hybrid! Our standard enterprise requirement for a hybrid schedule is to report onsite 4-16 days each month. The number of days reporting onsite will ultimately be determined by the employee's leadership and business unit needs. You will learn more throughout the hiring and onboarding process.
