Job Description

ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children's Hospital is a 169-bed facility that has grown to be the region's leading pediatric care facility. We offer a full spectrum of medical services to meet the unique needs of children from birth through adolescence. As an accredited facility by the Joint Commission, we strive to meet the highest national standards for safety and quality of care and are committed to continually improving patient care.

Highlights of our facility include a Level IIIb 72-bed unit Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that provides care for premature babies as early as 22 weeks gestation and as small as 14 oz.; the region's largest Level II pediatric trauma center; a state-of-the-art cancer center for pediatric cancer patients; and the first dual-certified asthma program for treating both inpatient and outpatients by the Joint Commission in Ohio.

Position Summary:

The Child Life Specialist I will perform patient care assignments and carry out established procedures under general guidance of the Child Life team approach and supervision. They will assist pediatric patients in the continuum of normal growth and development within the hospital setting. Other duties include, but are not limited to:

Assist with group activities (holiday celebrations, birthday parties, special events) which provide diversion for pediatric patients/families, attentive to cultural diversity. Demonstrate understanding of special needs to enhance children's abilities, opportunities for variety of play, activities and other interactions which promote self-healing, self-expression, understanding and mastery. Encourage family centered care by providing psychosocial support services to parents while encouraging parent participation in procedural and developmental support. Provide therapeutic activities to pediatric patients confined to their rooms to promote effective coping. Support families confronting grief and bereavement issues with resources to process feelings. Monitor activity room supplies to support activities and physical environment to meet safety/infection control/ sanitize as needed. Provide documentation in electronic medical record to reflect patient/family care in a concise, objective and accurate manner, according to established department and hospital standards. Assign volunteers to patients for bedside cradling and arts and craft activities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in a related field of study (Child Life, Family Studies, Counseling, Child Development, Education) Previous work experience with children in healthcare environments Understanding of growth and development Ability to interact with seriously ill children of all developmental levels, their siblings, parents and extended family members Ability to input and retrieve information from electric charting system

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in Child Life or closely related field of study with completion of ACLP required coursework Completion of 600-hour Child Life internship under the direct supervision of a Certified Child Life Specialist required Certification as a Child Life Specialist is preferred; must be eligible to meet certification requirements within 1 year of hire
