Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

A Physician Assistant (PA) is a health professional registered by the State of Ohio to practice medicine with physician supervision. Physician assistants are qualified by graduation from an accredited physician assistant program and certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. The Physician Assistant performs preoperative History and Physical Examinations on surgical patients as assigned.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise

  1. Performs patient assessment and evaluation as appropriate:

a. Performs admission history and physical examination and records reports. b. Performs primary evaluations on patients. c. Performs developmental screening examinations as appropriate.

  1. Manages the care and treatment of patients per scope of practice, level of competence, and current standards of care.

a. Rounds on advanced admissions patients. b. Modifies management plan as appropriate. c. Analyses and interprets data, formulates problem lists, and develops comprehensive plans of care. d. Responds to calls from nursing and other direct care providers regarding changes in patient condition. e. Initiates consultation requests to physician specialists and to other health professionals as appropriate.

  1. Develops and participates in quality improvement activities as outlined in Ohio Supervisory Agreement.

a. Monitors effectiveness of care plans. b. Participates in chart review with collaborating physician.

  1. Carries out appropriate documentation as required for safe clinical practice and to meet regulatory and organizational requirements.

  2. Maintains professional licensure and certification. Participates in periodic clinical in-services.

a. Attends annual conferences or completes self-study programs to achieve minimum professional requirements. b. Meets annual competency requirements.

  1. Serves as liaison between medical, clinical and support staffs to improve quality of patient care delivery and increase operational efficiency and effectiveness.

  2. Facilitates education process within department.

a. Participates in formal and informal orientation of newly hired PAs and NPs. b. Participates in education/staff development for nursing staff as request.

  1. Performs other duties as requested. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Must have a master's degree. Ability to participate in multidisciplinary care teams as patient care providers. Skills: Ability to work as member of multidisciplinary team is essential. Must be able to understand directions, communicate and respond to inquiries; requires effective interpersonal skills with a wide variety of individuals. Possess a high level of organizational, delegation and problem-solving skills. Must be able to input and retrieve information from computer. Must possess ability to design, implement, evaluate, and coordinate patient care programs and delivery approaches. Years of Experience: Previous experience in an acute care setting. License: Completion of a CAHEA accredited PA program, which is sponsored by the American Medical Association, and hold a current Ohio state license. Must successfully complete hospital credentialing process. Certification: Must be certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant as well as possess a current certificate of registration to practice in the State of Ohio. Must have current BLS.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Personal Protective Equipment: Per Hospital Policy Physical Demands: Must be able to move about hospital and between workstations; and prolonged periods of standing. Must be able to understand directions, communicate and respond to inquiries; requires effective interpersonal skills. Must be able to operate machinery. Must be able to frequently move, lift or carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs., 20% of the time. Must be able to input and retrieve information from computer.
