Job Summary:
This position is for an Advanced Power Products (APP) Compliance Team Leader. The APP product line incorporates on and off board chargers, stationary and mobile batteries, energy storage systems, bi-directional industrial inverters, hydrogen fuel cells, and photovoltaic solar panels. This is a growing and emerging area where understanding of compliance is imperative to secure Caterpillar's future in this space. Compliance needs include Risk Assessments, Safety Reviews, Functional Safety, and general compliance support. This can also include review and interpretation of related certification and standards to bring Voice of Regulation to our New Product Introductions.
The team leader role accounts for up to 50% of this assignment. The remainder will be as an individual contributor, bringing technical expertise to the compliance space for APP as well as Caterpillar. This team leader must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience new business knowledge and skill. Program/project management and strong organizational skills are critical.
Interpersonal, leadership, and strong communication skills are required. Significant challenges of this position are working with people: enhancing the team's creativity; facilitating the team's cooperation; clearly communicating the requirements and tasks, while gaining input from the team on refinement of same; translating both verbal and non-verbal information from the customer, management, and team members. The Project Team Leaders is the spokesperson for the team in meetings with multiple levels of management and with the customer. Team leader must develop good networks to enable them to obtain resources and cooperation needed and remove roadblocks so that they can insure the success of their team. Team Leader may be called upon to give input to performance reviews for team members. The Project Team Leader must be at the Fully Skilled level in the role-based competencies of Managing Vision & Purpose, Decision Quality, and Negotiating.
The incumbent would set strategy at the project level. The project would solve problems for one or more technology, component, product, or process.
Project scope will vary from a moderate technical focus to a broader, multi-systems focus, and will require incumbent to broaden business understanding. Projects will have a moderately broad technical scope. Understanding and defining benefits of project or program to the customer is crucial. Challenges include increased competitive pressure, increasing project complexity and customer demands.
Therefore, the ability to draw upon foundational product development skills such as conceptual design, development of product and/or process, data analysis & extraction, failure resolution & prevention, and requirements management is required. Ever increasing skill in technical project management, development of product, internal and external requirements management, and cost-value management is also required. Team leaders must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience, an understanding the customers' needs and application of the product or process, as well as keeping up with technology. Experience in more than one engineering function is desirable, and experience in more than one business or service unit would be helpful.
Multiple systems focus. Project Team Leaders are accountable for pulling together a cross functional team of individuals, who may or may not have worked together before, to solve a moderately complex technical problem or create critical component(s) and system(s) or processes. Team leaders may or may not select the team and the project or program deadline. Incumbent will be expected to pull input from a cross functional team to formulate decisions and develop the output for the project. Key areas of responsibility encountered in the role of team leader are: plan and manage the job/project; focus on and communicate to the business/financial aspects of the project or program; provide a supportive work environment for the team; mentor, coach and develop others; and manage one's own development. The team leader will interact with people from diverse technical and cultural backgrounds. Incumbent will work within the team and beyond the team with contractors, hourly, salaried and management employees, suppliers, customers and individuals working in many Caterpillar organizations.
Decisions may affect the project or program team, the division or business unit, suppliers, both internal and external customers and the market. Decisions may significantly impact an entire product, process or factory, warranty, sales and customer perception, and government contracts and university research and can cause an evolutionary change in technology. Expectations demand that jobs/projects be completed on time, independent of the hours required. Acknowledging trade-offs between time, resources and quality and raising the customers' and management's awareness of those trade-offs is essential. Incumbent may be called upon to select suppliers.
Job Duties and Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

Interpretation of and Coaching on Standards applicable to on and off board chargers, stationary and mobile batteries, energy storage systems, bi-directional industrial inverters, hydrogen fuel cells, and photovoltaic solar panels
Interpretation and Voice of Regulation understanding of Electrical Grid Code
Developing Standards for Fuel Cells and Battery Safety
Basic Requirements:
Accredited engineering degree or a closely related technical degree required.
13-15 years of engineering experience required.
In lieu of an accredited Engineering or Technical degree, this level of a position will require at least 15 years of progressively responsible, directly related experience.
Previous team leadership experience is necessary.
Top Candidates May Have:
Electrical engineering experience with electric drive, embedded software controls, Li-ion battery design and power generation.
Experience with Product Safety.
Experience in more than one engineering function is desirable and experience in more than one business or service unit would be helpful.
