Position Description
Ramp Controllers control aircraft on and within the vicinity of the airport terminal ramp according to established procedures and policies to prevent collisions and minimize delays arising from traffic congestion. The incumbent is responsible for the safe, orderly and expeditious movement of aircraft to and from terminal gates and parking areas. Duties include:
Answering radio calls
Issuing movement/taxi instructions
Coordinating with the Air Traffic Control Tower, pilots and airline dispatchers over landlines, radios and computer systems to determine the best way to expeditious and efficient move aircraft
Operating various types of equipment such as: radios, telephones, interphones, computer systems, radar, recording systems, weather equipment, light guns, airport/runway lighting systems, and backup equipment
Alerting airport emergency crews and other designated personnel when aircraft are having flight difficulties
Maintaining and disseminating records of daily operations
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Must be appropriately experienced and competent to perform the duties of ramp controller with all the following minimum qualifications:
(1). High School Diploma (or GED);
(2). Minimum of four (4) years experience as a journey level air traffic controller with the United States Department of Defense or FAA;
(3). Mobility and fitness to safely work in an air traffic control type tower including but not limited to:
(i) ability to lean over work consoles/equipment to conduct panoramic surveillance of aircraft;
(ii) distant and near vision correctable to 20/20 in each eye, with normal color vision;
(iii) speech to communicate effectively and clearly in English; (iv) hearing to demonstrate no chronic disease of the ear that might interfere with the comfortable use of standard or cordless headsets; and
(v) no hearing loss in either ear of more than 25 decibels in the 500, 1000 or 2000 Hz ranges and no more than a 20 db loss in the better ear by audiometer, using ANSI (1969) standards;
(4). Successful completion of an education/experience background investigation as well as a fingerprint based criminal history record check;
(5). Ability to be granted and maintain a security badge as mandated by the Authority, FAA and TSA; and
(6). Ability to meet all minimum drug screening and prohibitions as established by the Authority and under applicable law.
