Contamination Control Engineer
Belong. Connect. Grow. with KBR!
Join us and work on one-of-a-kind projects to explore the Earth, Moon, and planets. We are currently staffing to support our NASA customers to plan, implement and ensure compliance with Contamination Engineering requirements to enable a new on-orbit satellite servicing capability.
Job Description
This job includes implementing contamination controls and operations for spacecraft, instruments, and associated hardware at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and will later involve preparations for transportation and launch. You will work with a more senior Contamination Control Engineer(s) and will guide and instruct technicians to ensure proper contamination control during Integration and Test (I&T) operations, including hardware cleaning, inspection, bagging and transport. Challenges include risk mitigation during environmental test (thermal vacuum, vibration, acoustic & electromagnetic compatibility) as well as during internal transport. You will also monitor, evaluate, and verify implementation of Project contamination control requirements and assist in troubleshooting and solving contamination problems. It is important for you to be agile and adaptable as this can be a rapidly evolving environment, sometimes with short turnaround needed to respond to Project needs. These activities will be primarily in-person, on site at GSFC and later at the launch facilities. Travel will be infrequent and typically for a few days at a time.
Requirements
Education: Bachelor of Science
Preferred Disciplines: Engineering, Chemistry or Physics
Required Skills & Experience:
2 years of experience
This position requires substantial, relevant experience working in an aerospace clean room, preferably with space flight hardware, and ideally on site at GSFC. You also need a suitable foundation of knowledge/skills, like a B.S. in Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or Math (or equivalent experience), plus a willingness and demonstrated ability to learn on the job. Equally important are good communication skills, including across disciplines and technical knowledge levels. You will need to work well in a team, accept direction from more experienced contamination control engineers, and with engineers in various disciplines, as well technicians and management staff.
Desirable Skills, Experience: Experience with hardware cleaning and inspection methods in aerospace clean rooms is highly desirable. Knowledge of relevant materials, processes, coatings, planetary protection (biology, microbiology), outgassing, off gassing, vacuum systems, and the space environment (vacuum, particulate and electromagnetic radiation, thermal, atomic oxygen) are valuable.
Experience and/or Education in lieu of these qualifications will be reviewed for applicability to meet these requirements.
