Job Description

  • GENERAL SUMMARY

  • The Histology Technician performs a variety of technical procedures under the direct supervision of the Pathologist that result in the creation of microscopic slide preparations. Knowledge acquired through experience and education under general supervision. Technical procedures can include: specimen collection and triage, gross examination of specimen (assist), specimen processing, microtomy techniques, frozen section techniques, and special specimen preparation (EM, Cytology, etc.). Reports to the Clinical Laboratory Scientist Manager.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operates and maintains lab instrumentation, records and documentation required to manage the daily workflow and provide QC/QA monitors.

  • Maintains confidentially regarding all phases of laboratory work and findings.

  • May assist with the orientation and training of other employees.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • None required.

  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Approximately three to six months experience as a Laboratory Systems Facilitator or equivalent position is necessary in order to gain an understanding of departmental policies and procedures.

  • Requires knowledge in medical terminology, general biology, anatomy, physiology and chemistry with an understanding of the scientific method.

  • Must possess basic computer knowledge for the registration of patient demographics, test order entry and result retrieval.

  • Interpersonal skills required to successfully perform as a team member in a constantly changing environment.

  • Must be able to effectively communicate clinical data to physicians and other health care providers.

  • Must provide record of a completed diploma (or equivalent) or academic transcript for those areas performing complexity testing.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Laboratory service areas work environment with frequent exposure to physical discomforts due to unpleasant odors from specimens and chemicals. Frequent exposure to infectious agents when handling hazardous material, but potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed.
