GENERAL SUMMARY

The Child Advocacy Center Medical Director is responsible for diagnosing and managing acute and chronic manifestations of child abuse. A high level of independence in performance of the role and/or solution of problems is expected, however, demonstrated cooperation and collaboration is equally essential for successful functioning. Reports medically to the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Administratively to the Executive Director of the Child Advocacy Center.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides inpatient and outpatient child abuse assessment and consultation.

  • Serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team and provides education to medical, legal and investigative individuals on child abuse and related issues.

  • Works collaboratively with law enforcement agencies, child protective services or other agencies responsible for investigating possible maltreatment.

  • Provides expert testimony in court.

  • Designs and conducts research in the field of child abuse.

  • Serves as the Fellowship Director, training pediatricians to become medical experts in all areas of child abuse and neglect.

  • Provides leadership on program developments, improvements and projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • Licensed as a Medical Doctor by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Board certification in Child Abuse Pediatrics.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Doctor of medicine (M.D.) degree from an accredited medical school.

  • Requires approximately five to seven years progressively more responsible related work experience, three to five of which were in a management role.

  • Professional knowledge of areas of responsibility to include theory, practice and administration in order to direct planning and implementation.

  • Requires analytical skills necessary to organize and oversee work of subordinates, prepare reports and policies.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills necessary.

  • Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license and be able to meet the insurance requirements of the hospital, if required by position.

  • Increased Security Clearance May Be Required: FBI fingerprinting, criminal background check, and Child Protective Services registry search.
