Position Description
Serco is currently seeking an Environmental Laboratory Chemist! This is an exciting opportunity that involves both field and laboratory testing and support for environmental samples. The Chemist will assist with the performance of established chemical analyses, instrument calibrations and maintenance, and data interpretation and validation.

Our skilled scientists collaborate with EPA staff at their state-of-the-art Laboratory Services and Applied Science Division (LSASD) in Athens Georgia. In this role, you will:
Conduct metals digestion and analysis utilizing EPA methods.
Conduct organic extractions utilizing EPA methods.
Perform TDS/TSS/TS, TOC, % solids and other analyses utilizing EPA methods.
Perform TCLP sample preparation using EPA methods.
PerformPFAS sample preparation using EPA methods.
Perform calibrations of pressurized gas analytical standards used in NPAP program.
Prepare air canisters and use air flow controllers.
Perform hazardous waste disposal for laboratories.
Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate instruments.
Prepare reagents and samples to be used in performing assays.
Demonstrate proper cleaning techniques for work area, instrumentation, and equipment.
Interpret and evaluate data and upload results to Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)for a final report.
Perform review on the organic and inorganic analytical data to ensure completeness and integrity of results. May include data from outside laboratories submitted thru Contract Laboratory Program (CLP). Prepare detailed written reports of findings.
Perform sample disposal and Laboratory clean ups for GLP practice.
Perform SOP review, internal audit, and corrective action when needed.
Monitor workflow for incoming samples and manage backlog and due dates.
Work independently on administrative and technical projects assigned by laboratory supervisors.
Manage general laboratory operations and functions, including monitoring and requesting supplies and materials to maintain lab supply inventory.
Track inventory of supplies and reagents to ensure no interruption of workflow.
Trend and monitor key performance metrics.
Operate other instrumentation as trained.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will have:
A bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related discipline and two years of directly related laboratory experience, or a master's degree in chemistry or a related discipline.
Direct experience operating various laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
Experience with metals preparation and organic extractions by EPA methods.
Experience performing TOC and TSS/TDS/TS analyses and TCLP sample preparation.
Ability to prepare professional technical written reports.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Ability to obtain a Public Trust Certificate from EPA's Personal Security Branch.
Excellent computer skills and proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
Ability to work effectively with multiple disciplines.
A solid background in analysis and interpretation of data.
Ability to follow standard operating procedures and perform basic mathematical calculations.
This position is contigent on your ability to successfully complete a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends if required.
Must be able to work standing for long periods.
Must be able to work inside a chemical laboratory and handle chemicals.
Must be able to wear all PPE (personal protective equipment).
Additional desired experience and skills:
Successful applicant will need to have good attention to detail and be able to document all sampling meticulously (training will be provided as to requirements).
Knowledge of chemical families and compatibilities.
