Job Duties

For Caterpillar, digital means using technology to extract data from our machines and engines and transform it into valuable recommendations or -insights,- to help customers make better, more informed decisions and help Caterpillar make robust products with the lowest total ownership cost. Our products generate and process large amounts of data from sensors, on-board models, and control algorithms in real-time creating real-world machine usage information. The integrated mechanical and electronic control systems, associated control algorithms and on-board information systems generate, store and transmit this critical machine information that is highly useful for product development and product improvement. Through data analytics and modeling, this information can be mined for actionable insights.

This position represents the journey level position within embedded software engineering. The key role of a Sr. Embedded Software Engineer is that of contributor to the planning and delivery of a complex embedded software project. This position will be accountable for contributing to the requirements development, requirements decomposition, concept, development, and design of complex software components, subsystems, or processes. This position performs complex analysis work, identifies design problems, and resolves problems. Although this position may be the transition from individual contributor to team leadership, the major focus of the job is on technical delivery. Incumbents may work more directly with different units, suppliers, customers, and/or other teams. This requires the ability to communicate technical information in a concise and accurate manner. Decisions made may affect the project team and its delivery of the project. Decisions may significantly impact on negotiations with suppliers, leveraging new technologies, warranty, costs, sales, and customer perception.

Success factors for the Sr. Embedded Software Engineer include demonstrating excellent analytical skills and a mastery of software engineering concepts, tools and processes. Major challenges facing incumbents are meeting goals for cost, reliability, and performance, and managing multiple priorities. This position must keep up-to-date on changing customer needs as the project progresses, stay current with new technology, and provide guidance and direction on the project to less experienced engineers, technologists, and technicians. Incumbents may be expected to bear significant responsibility for completion of a project with major focus on delivery.

Key areas of responsibility encountered in this role may include any or all of the following: concept, design, test and promote new software features and processes; perform requirements analysis and decomposition; evaluate new languages, development tools or processes; perform product maintenance; manage the software lifecycle through version control and configuration management; keep up to date on new technologies or develop new technologies; communicate technical information to customers, team members, suppliers and other units; and support and advise other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, customers and suppliers.

Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of emerging technologies such as Autosar, continuous integration and build, native simulation and automated test. Key skills to be developed at this level are failure prediction and management, technology time/cost analysis, conceptual design, practical application of theory, knowledge of the NPI process, and communication skills.

Basic Qualifications

Requires a bachelor degree in an accredited Engineering or Computer Science curriculum plus 5 to 11 years of experience, or an advanced degree in an Engineering or Computer Science curriculum plus 4 to 10 years of experience.
