JOB SUMMARY
This position will provide leadership, guidance and direction to Protection & Control Applications (PCA) and serve as a technical resource in the Protection System Applications area to Substation Engineering, System Operations, and Field Services personnel. A significant portion of this position will be devoted to providing quality assurance reviews for protective relaying applications, calculations, and settings as well as oversight of the organization's NERC compliance program. The incumbent will structure and coordinate training for PCA personnel to develop employee technical expertise. Other responsibilities include performing special projects and working with vendors to identify and implement protective equipment products to serve Southern Company's needs.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform quality assurance reviews for protective relaying applications, calculations and settings
Provide guidance for major or complex projects
Provide guidance for NERC reliability standards and lead compliance program
Train personnel in Protection & Control Applications
Support and participate in the development of Southern Company Protection & Control standards and criteria
Serve as a technical resource to the Control Design and Field Services organizations for design consistency and problem resolution
Serve on Southern Company and Industry committees, providing leadership and guidance to ensure that the best designs are developed and applied for the Southern Company
Provide formal and informal training to develop PCA employee technical expertise
Serve as a System Protection resource for the Southern Company Technical Training program and as an instructor in Technical Training classes
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience Requirements:
B.S. or higher in Electrical Engineering is required
Degree with Power System emphasis is highly desirable
Professional Engineer License is required
Extensive experience in protection and control is required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Proven ability in applying safe work practices
Proficient in electromechanical and microprocessor protection and control systems and their design and operation
Proficient in protection system applications and calculations
Proficient in NERC and SERC compliance standards
Knowledge of Protection & Control Applications processes and procedures
Knowledge of Transmission and Distribution System Operating Procedures
Excellent oral and written communications skills
Presentation skills to effectively communicate technical knowledge to others
Extensive problem solving skills
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
