GENERAL SUMMARY
The RN - NICU Lactation Consultant is responsible for providing consultation and education to patients, families, staff, health care professionals and others regarding lactation and breast-feeding. The RN - NICU Lactation Consultant is instrumental in the design, coordination, education, evaluation and/or implementation of programs related to the patient care process. Reports to the department leadership.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides clinical oversight, assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of lactation services in support of breast-feeding women and families in the defining and achievement of breast-feeding goals.
Functions as a member of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team and serves as a clinical resource to staff on breast-feeding education and issues.
Timely and accurately documents care in medical record.
Performs other duties as assigned.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license.
Current State certification as a lactation consultant required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Graduate of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program required. Will consider Associates in Nursing / Diploma in Nursing with applicable experience and actively enrolled in a BSN program within three years completion from the date of hire.
Two to three years of professional lactation experience necessary.
Must maintain updated knowledge of lactation services by obtaining a minimum of 20 hours per year of documented CEU's related to lactation services.
RN certification preferred.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills necessary.
CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.
WORKING CONDITIONS
In or near a clinical patient care environment with exposure to communicable disease and moderately adverse working conditions due to performance of certain patient care activities.
