Job Description

  • GENERAL SUMMARY

  • The RN - NICU Lactation Consultant is responsible for providing consultation and education to patients, families, staff, health care professionals and others regarding lactation and breast-feeding. The RN - NICU Lactation Consultant is instrumental in the design, coordination, education, evaluation and/or implementation of programs related to the patient care process. Reports to the department leadership.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides clinical oversight, assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of lactation services in support of breast-feeding women and families in the defining and achievement of breast-feeding goals.

  • Functions as a member of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team and serves as a clinical resource to staff on breast-feeding education and issues.

  • Timely and accurately documents care in medical record.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license.

  • Current State certification as a lactation consultant required.

  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduate of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program required. Will consider Associates in Nursing / Diploma in Nursing with applicable experience and actively enrolled in a BSN program within three years completion from the date of hire.

  • Two to three years of professional lactation experience necessary.

  • Must maintain updated knowledge of lactation services by obtaining a minimum of 20 hours per year of documented CEU's related to lactation services.

  • RN certification preferred.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills necessary.

  • CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS

  • In or near a clinical patient care environment with exposure to communicable disease and moderately adverse working conditions due to performance of certain patient care activities.
