The Operations Specialist has the ability to select their home facility/location to be based out of. Serco and the Aviation Operations Specialist will coordinate selection of the home facility based on geographic location, traffic, and complexity. Serco Inc. is a federal government contractor that provides air traffic control services at Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Contract Towers (FCTs), Non-Federal Contract Towers (NFCT), Remote Air Traffic Control Towers and Ramp Control Services in 12 western states.

The Operations Specialist travels to any one of Serco's towers, many times on short notice, obtains a quick certification and then fills in as an Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS) or Air Traffic Manager (ATM) as needed. Extensive travel is required. Must be familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Must rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Needs to have the ability to lead and direct the work of others. Typically reports to an executive or a manager.

As an ATCS, the Operations Specialist will control air traffic on and within the vicinity of the airport according to established procedures and policies to prevent collisions and minimize delays arising from traffic congestion. They are responsible for the safe, orderly and expeditious movement of air traffic through the nation's airspace.

ATCS duties include:

  • Answering radio calls from arriving and departing aircraft

  • Issuing landing/takeoff instructions

  • Issuing information such as runway to use, wind velocity and direction, visibility, taxiing instructions, and pertinent data on other aircraft operating in vicinity

  • Issuing air traffic clearances

  • Providing advice based on their own observations and information from the National Weather - Service, IFR control facilities, flight service stations, pilots, and other sources

  • Taking and disseminating weather observations at Limited Aviation Weather Reporting Station (LAWRS) or Supplemental Aviation Weather Reporting Station (SAWRS) facilities

  • Transferring control to receiving facilities when aircraft leave their airspace and receiving control of aircraft coming into their airspace

  • Operating various types of equipment such as: radios, telephones, interphones, computer systems, radar, recording systems, weather equipment, light guns, airport/runway lighting systems, and backup equipment

  • Alerting airport emergency crews and other designated personnel when aircraft are having flight difficulties

  • Coordinating with and issuing instructions to airport vehicles and personnel

  • Maintaining and disseminating records of daily operations

  • Other duties as assigned

As an ATM, the Operations Specialist must be familiar with standard ATC concepts, practices, procedures and function as an ATCS. A manager must rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Duties include:

  • Reporting to the Area Manager

  • Supervising

  • Scheduling

  • Overseeing and directing training for controllers

  • Ensuring that all reporting requirements are met

  • Ensuring all facility directives and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are followed

  • Acting as a liaison with airport management and FAA at local levels

Qualifications

Requirements to join the team

  • US Citizenship

  • An FAA Second Class Medical Certificate

  • A Control Tower Operator (CTO) rating or a Credential with a Tower Rating and 6 months of practical experience in accordance with 14 CFR Part 65.39

  • Minimum 5 years' experience as an air traffic controller with a minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience preferred.

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in the FAA Contract Tower Program preferred.

  • Eligibility to work for Serco under Federal Immigration Laws

  • Verification of education and employment references from previous employers including the release of drug and alcohol records

  • Passing a pre-employment drug screen

  • Receiving an FAA Security clearance (interim and final suitability)

  • Proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States
