The position will be located at The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL
POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for providing project scoping, estimating, and conceptual design services in support of the Operating Company's Protection and Control projects. The ideal candidate will be responsible for supporting the Operating Company's planning and budgeting processes by providing complete and accurate estimates of material, labor, and total costs associated with substation projects. The position will predominately be focused on Alabama Power Company projects however, on occasion will be required to assist with the other Southern Company Entities. The position will require field visits and may involve occasional overnight travel.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
BS Engineering, Engineering Technology or Two-year degree from a technical school/university is strongly preferred.
BS Engineering or Engineering Technology degree in Electrical is preferred.
Substantial work experience in lieu of a degree will be considered.
Professional Engineering (P.E.) license is a plus.
Experience:
Minimum three (3) years of experience in transmission and distribution substation protection and control design or field testing and commissioning is required.
Prior experience in developing protective relay settings is a plus.
Prior experience in substation physical design, construction, operations or maintenance is a plus.
Prior experience in transmission project development and cost estimating is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Working knowledge of the T&PS Engineering design standards, processes, procedures and tools used to scope, estimate, and design substation projects.
Ability to interpret engineering design packages including but not limited to one-line, AC/DC schematics, panel layout & wiring, logic and communication diagrams.
Detailed knowledge of protective relaying, control schemes and concepts.
General knowledge of transmission planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance.
General knowledge of the activities associated with surveying, land acquisition, and obtaining easements.
Working knowledge of Operating Company processes, procedures and tools used in the development of substation projects.
Detailed knowledge of substation cost estimating.
Detailed knowledge of substation construction methods, equipment, techniques and associated costs.
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office products and transmission software applications currently in use to estimate and design substation projects.
Time management and organizational skills sufficient to manage multiple projects with various priorities and competing deadlines.
Exhibits strong problem solving, oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to establish and maintain peer and customer relationships across organizational lines.
Proven ability to build consensus and achieve results through the effective use of persuasive communication and formal presentation skills.
Valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record will be required.
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
This position is responsible for providing project scoping and estimating services in support of the Operating Company's substation projects. Specific requirements are as follows:
Create a safe work environment through personal commitment to safety.
Apply substation engineering expertise to accurately "scope" projects and to provide quality cost and duration estimates in a timely fashion.
Attend substation sites, field scoping meetings, and project meetings to identify scoping additions and/or assist with development of final scope lock.
Develop recommended scoping addition document, design planning document and conceptual design packages used to produce cost estimates, project schedules and as the basis for detailed design activities.
Provide contractor oversight as needed for outsourced worked in assigned regions within APC
Provide timely and accurate cost estimates to customers including Project Management, Transmission Planning, and Transmission Maintenance Support to facilitate budget development and management.
Serve as the substation engineering representative on solution team and site selection committees and prepare conceptual designs as required to support the process.
Provide input on the development and refinement of substation engineering estimating units used in the estimating system (TEAMS) to ensure accurate estimates of equipment, material, labor durations, and total costs.
Provide input on the continued development of Design Planning Document and P&C Scoping Checklist.
Provide work direction and oversight for supplemental staff as needed.
Participate in and support Technical and Project Solutions activities and initiatives.
Serve as a damage assessment team member after major storms after receiving the company-provided training.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
The position will require field visits and may involve occasional overnight travel.
Travel will be minimal - approximately 25%.
