Description
To serve as an individual contributor on projects and assignments in the electrical, electronics, or software field that are complex in nature and that support and enhance Caterpillar product performance, durability, reliability, quality, and serviceability.
Job Duties
For Caterpillar, digital means using technology to extract data from our machines and engines and transform it into valuable recommendations or -insights,- to help customers make better, more informed decisions and help Caterpillar make robust products with the lowest total ownership cost. Our products generate and process large amounts of data from sensors, on-board models, and control algorithms in real-time creating real-world machine usage information. Verification/Validation Engineers are fully engaged in digital, both through a technical awareness of the digital components & systems which they test, and through expertly utilizing digital tools and methodologies when they plan and execute tests.
The key role of this engineering position is to move from learning and assisting others to fully contributing. At this level, Electronic Systems Verification/Validation Engineers begin partnering with and providing technical guidance within and between units and other teams. Ability to gather relevant information, compare and contrast data, identify relationships, and predict and manage failures is critical. Challenges include challenging the status quo and championing new initiatives, collaborating with team members and other teams, and keeping abreast of advancing technology. Decisions may affect the work group or project team, suppliers, multiple units, and both internal and external customers, and these decisions have significant impact on warranty, total cost of non-quality, customer perception, costs, sales, and the leveraging of technology.
Electronic Systems Verification/Validation Engineers must perform complex analysis work, identifying and solving problems. Typical they are expected to:
Clarify product requirements and ensure alignment with appropriate stakeholders
Organize and facilitate FMEAs or functional/performance/behavior analyses
Assist in the creation of validation plans and define acceptance criteria
Evaluate existing validations controls, standard test procedures for effective risk mitigation
Execute and/or coordinate execution of product tests
Analyze test results and summarize conclusions
Document test conclusions with traceability
Track product development issues to completion
Communicate technical information to team members and other business units
Generate and present accurate reports for validation thoroughness, status, and results
Innovate for efficiency
Keeping up with industry trends and new technology breakthroughs is essential and requires continuous learning through self/internet study as well as interaction with other engineers through conferences and papers. Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology. Key learning includes: knowledge of Caterpillar and competitive product performance and application, understanding of customers' needs, working knowledge of key processes, data analysis and data extraction skills, project management, and communication skills.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering related field and 1-6 years of job-related experience OR Master's degree in Engineering related field and 1-4 years of job-related experience
Experience in dSpace, Opal-RT, Python, Google Test, plant modeling, and/or regression testing
Top Candidates Will Also Have
Demonstrated expertise in operation and fault modes of: electronic sensors, actuators & other inductive loads, classic controls methods (e.g. PID), communication networks (e.g. J1939/CAN/Ethernet), test automation, and instrumentations & data collection tools
Demonstrated expertise in: programming, graphical programming environments, version management tools, and software development processes
