What you'll do here:

The Royalties Manager is a newly established role for Gale, a Cengage Group business. This will be a critical new member of the Publisher Relations team and will report directly to the senior manager of that group. The role will be focused on day-to-day royalty related activities for our eBooks and periodicals and on improvements in processes, quality control, publisher relationships, the integrity of reporting and royalty payments, and efficiencies. This person will also be instrumental in thinking strategically about third party relationships and how best to optimize those. The role will collaborate closely with the Content Data Operations team that is a shared service across Cengage Group, Publisher Relations, Gale Product Managers, Finance, and the Continuous Improvement Office. It is anticipated that this person may have 1-2 direct reports over time.

Key to success in this position is the ability to clearly articulate the big picture as well as roll up the sleeves and dive into details. A strong data-orientation is critical. The ideal candidate will command a strong understanding of royalty intricacies, be analytical, highly value accuracy and proficiency, seek to improve the experience of all internal and external partners, and be pro-active in solutioning complex issues.

General responsibilities

Strategic & Analytical

  • Analyze complex royalty related issues including root-cause analysis, partner with the appropriate owner to correct

  • Develop a tracking mechanism for issues and communicate statuses and impacts to senior management and partners on an ongoing basis

  • Act with urgency to attend to publisher requests and reach resolutions expediently and effectively; improve relationships and establish trust

  • Be the go-to person for the Gale business on eBook and periodical royalty related issues, questions, or data needs

  • Implement process improvements that reduce time, risk, and errors including for the operational and recurring responsibilities noted below; partner with the Continuous Improvement Office, as needed, to assess and execute on these improvements; partner with the CDO to identify, influence, and guide them on their enhancement opportunities

  • Increase the integrity of royalty results in financial reports, statements, and payments, working closely with Finance and other key groups. Create transparency into such things as unearned guarantees, individual publisher performance and profitability, etc.

  • Communicate effectively to internal partners with regular updates and report-outs to the VP of Finance and the full Gale Executive Leadership Team

  • Together with the head of Publisher Relations, establish a documented interaction model with the Content Data Operations group (CDO) with clear roles and responsibilities, service expectations, and norms

  • Seek ways to lower royalty costs and improve the margins of the business

  • Ad hoc projects that include exposure to Finance, senior leadership, and the broader Cengage organization.

Operational & Recurring

  • Facilitate the monthly importation of usage data into systems so that royalties can be accurately calculated

  • Create and distribute publisher statements in desired formats; work closely with the software owner to determine if automation can be achieved

  • Liaise with Cengage's Vendor Management team on third party onboarding and requests such as address and direct deposit changes, rights reversion, requests for 1099s, etc.

  • Own payments for advances and licensing fees

Skills you will need here:

  • Bachelor's degree or quantitative/analytics certification preferred

  • 5 years of professional experience in Publisher Relations, business analysis, and/ or accounting and reconciliations

  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills to manage and resolve highly complex business issues

  • Lean six sigma background or related experience in continuous improvement

  • Highly proficient with data mining and analysis; keen eye for detail

  • Strong influencing abilities, verbal and written communication, and executive presence

  • Superb interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to forge strong relationships with diverse partners

  • Strong proficiency with MS Office, especially Excel

  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities
