WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Roadway Engineer for our Herndon, VA office. Be involved in projects with our Mid-Atlantic District Transportation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client's objectives and solves their challenges.
The successful candidate should have experience in civil/roadway design and plans production for traditional delivery and/or alternative delivery projects. This position will function as a task manager and/or design engineer on projects for VDOT and other state agencies; Northern Virginia counties and cities; and other local agency / municipal clients.
Your Impact
Work collaboratively as part of a multi-discipline team of engineers to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects.
Apply high-level civil engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various infrastructure project phases involving more complex infrastructure and transportation engineering work including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
Lead civil engineering projects ensuring contributors know what they are required to do and by when, preparing and overseeing relevant project budgets, monitoring external events, tracking hours and expenses, ensuring satisfactory performance, and supervising subcontractors, contract work, and employees.
Lead and/or assist senior project managers with project coordination and collaboration efforts, including coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates for new/widened roadways, intersection improvements, bike and pedestrian facilities.
Calculate costs and quantities of material/equipment/labor, and ensure project work conforms with project requirements and specifications.
Coordinate with other design disciplines such as structures, hydraulics, traffic, and utilities, etc.
Review, monitor and/or develop complex layouts, sketches, plans, specifications and estimates, standards and guidelines, correspondence, and reports.
Provide guidance and training to entry-level engineers.
Regularly coordinate and communicate with project teams, manager, and civil team. Attend and participate in project team meetings.
Comply with regulatory requirements pertaining to the data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.
Interface with clients as needed and support business development initiatives.
Assist with preparation of technical proposals and labor estimates.
Establish and maintain cooperative and productive work relationships with employees, clients and other stakeholders.
Collaborate with professionals, other engineers, planners, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.
Remain current in latest civil engineering techniques and practices.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline.
7 to 10 years of relevant post education experience in engineering and civil design.
Engineer license required.
Professional Engineer license (or ability to obtain within six months) required.
Understanding and familiarity with AASHTO and VDOT Design Guidelines and Standards
Highly proficient with civil engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.
Experience with infrastructure design, including a variety of rehabilitation and reconstruction, new design, and construction projects.
Highly proficient with developing technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing intricate ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
Strong self-leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with clients, review agencies, project managers, and employees at all levels of the organization.
Solid understanding of MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer/Geopak roadway design software; familiarity with VDOT CADD/design software setup and standards; familiarity with AutoCAD and Autodesk Civil3D.
Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
Proficient with technical writing, office automation, spreadsheets and other design tools.
Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Able to work in a hybrid office environment, with three days in the office and the remaining days remote (no upper limit on in-office days, so able to work more than three days in the office if desired).
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Engineering.
Experience with VDOT and Northern Virginia counties/localities standards and projects.
Experience with FHWA Eastern Federal Lands and/or National Park Service standards and projects
Experience with Alternative Delivery projects (design-build, P3, CM/GC).
Familiarity with MS Project, Primavera or similar scheduling software.
Affiliation and/or leadership positions with professional societies.
