The Role

Implements and monitors industrial safety programs to ensure personnel and facility safety. Participates in monitoring and controlling the organization's safety standards in accordance with OSHA and State codes and regulations. Evaluates new equipment and materials for safety. Monitors employee exposure to chemicals and other toxic substances. Performs surveys and inspections to ensure compliance with the organization's policies, procedures, regulations and standards related to employee safety. Tests and services safety equipment and systems. Reports non-compliance or hazardous conditions found and suggests remedial action to be taken. May maintain storage areas, consumable supply inventories, and personnel protection equipment. Responds to emergency situations involving hazardous materials, radiation, or fire and smoke incidents in the facility.

At NNS, this position is considered an OSHA shipyard competent person (SCP) with monitoring confined spaces for safe entry and work and works under the guidance of a Certified Marine Chemist (CMC). The candidate will be expected to gain the following skills and knowledge:

  • Ability to understand and carry out the written or oral information or instructions left by a CMC.

  • Knowledge of the requirements in subparts B, C, D and H of 29 CFR Part 1915, and ability to perform all required tests and inspections set forth in those subparts.

  • Familiarity with the structure, location, and designation of spaces (including land-side spaces) where work is done.

  • Ability to use, calibrate, and interpret test results of atmospheric testing equipment (e.g., oxygen indicators, combustible gas indicators, carbon dioxide indicators, and carbon monoxide indicators).

  • Ability to inspect, test, and evaluate spaces to determine the need for further testing by a CMC.

  • Ability to maintain records of tests, inspections, and operations performed, as well as test results and any instructions.

Must Have

Associate's Degree and 3 years of relevant experience

One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:

  • NNS Apprentice School graduate

  • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate

  • High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

  • High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

Nice to Have

Prefer experience in industrial or shipbuilding settings. Prior experience in confined testing preferred.
