The time is right to join HNTB! We are seeking candidates for a Geotechnical Engineer II position in our Baton Rouge or New Orleans offices. The successful candidate will assist with geotechnical engineering tasks to support the design and inspection of foundations, retaining structures, slopes, channels, levees, dams, and other earth- and rock-supported elements.

The HNTB geotechnical practice provides services for multimodal transportation and civil works infrastructure including bridges, roadways, retaining structures, flood risk management, rail and transit, water resource projects, airports, stadiums, and major utility projects. The position may also offer opportunities for cross-discipline design and inspection tasks with bridge, roadway and water resource engineering sections and opportunities to support other national HNTB offices.

As a member of the team, you will contribute to successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB's clients including state DOT's, municipalities, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Responsibilities of Geotechnical Engineer II:

  • Responsible for completion of discipline engineering project elements such as reports, designs, specifications and plans

  • Assist with development of subsurface exploration and laboratory testing programs

  • Coordinate with subconsultants including oversight of subconsultant's budget, deliverables, and schedule

  • Review geotechnical laboratory data and subconsultant deliverables for conformance with applicable testing and project standards

  • Correlate and interpret field and laboratory results for use in analyses

  • Provide geotechnical analysis, design and reports for shallow and deep foundations, earth retaining systems, ground improvement procedures, embankments and cut slopes, levees and dams

  • Complete geotechnical analyses, report preparation, and design efforts with direction from a lead geotechnical engineer, and be responsive to project needs including design criteria, quality, schedule and budget requirements

  • Assist with development or review construction specifications, plan notes, and details related to geotechnical design elements (e.g., earthwork and foundations)

  • Provide support for design review and adhere to project quality management plan

  • Work closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects

  • Communicate effectively with geotechnical lead on the job, other discipline's designers and sub consultants

  • Perform construction observation of earthwork, foundation installation, wall construction and pavement construction

  • Perform operations and maintenance compliance inspections on flood control features.

  • Responsible for preparation and/or modification for select portions of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations

  • Develops project quantities and assists with development of cost estimates.

  • Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files

  • Able to self-sufficiently complete various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Develop, interpret and evaluate subsurface exploration testing programs and laboratory testing data

  • Perform geotechnical engineering analysis computations

  • Prepare engineering design reports and memoranda

  • Prepare construction documents

  • Collaborate with geotechnical and other project-team disciplines to develop design solutions

  • Perform construction and O&M

  • Execute geotechnical practice growth and self-growth

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or similar emphasis and 2 years of relevant experience

  • Master's degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or similar emphasis and 1 year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Passes NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam or obtained Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification

  • Ability to perform office and field work. The candidate should expect to spend between 2% to 10% of their time in the field with periods of little or no filed work.

  • Excellent written and strong interpersonal communication, ability to multi-task, efficient time management, work with team members remotely, and the flexibility to support multiple projects and task managers concurrently

  • Knowledge of geotechnical subsurface exploration techniques and laboratory testing procedures

  • Experience with geotechnical software (e.g., APile, GRLWEAP, SHAFT, LPile, Group, PYWall, SlopeW, SeepW, Settle3, SPW911, Shoring Suite, DeepEX ) and computer aided design software (e.g., MicroStation)
