Job Description

HII Mission Technologies Newport News Direct Support is seeking candidates with Submarine Sonar Systems experience to join out E25 Test Engineering team. Candidates with experience in testing, maintenance and operation of the Core SONAR Systems (AN/BQQ-5/10 and AN/BSY-1), arrays, hydrophone and transducer sensors to include AI&R, ACOMMS, Sound Velocity, Noise Monitoring, Hull Array, Top and Bottom Sounders, Distress Pinger, and Spherical Arrays are encouraged to apply. The selected candidate will be expected to qualify as a Lead Test Engineer and directly support the Chief Test Engineer and Assistant Chief Test Engineer in the Non Propulsion Test Engineering Group. This position is in Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News Virginia.

Essential Job Responsibilities

The Submarine Fleet Support Acoustics (SONAR) Engineering Technician is a demanding position requiring in-depth technical knowledge, and a solid grasp of the requirements of submarine SONAR electronics. The SONAR ET must be able to effectively communicate with internal and external customers including Shop and Shipboard Trade Management, Project, Engineering, SUPSHIP, NAVSEA Atlantic, and coordinate with many different organizations to safely and successfully accomplish testing on 688 Class submarines. The SONAR ET is responsible for testing, maintenance and operation of the Core SONAR Systems (AN/BQQ-5/10 and AN/BSY-1), arrays, hydrophone and transducer sensors to include AI&R, ACOMMS, Sound Velocity, Noise Monitoring, Hull Array, Top and Bottom Sounders, Distress Pinger, and Spherical Arrays. Provides technical support to engineers on a variety of technical tasks.

The SSN Fleet Support Assistance Chief Test Engineer (ACTE) Engineer Lead Test is a demanding position that requires in-depth knowledge and experience in the management of the Los Angeles Class Combat Systems (CS) Test Program. Requires a Los Angeles Class Lead Test Engineer (LTE) Qualification. The ELT must be able to effectively communicate with both internal and external customers. The E25 NPE ACTE ELT will assist and backup the E25 NPE CTE who is the Joint Test Group (JTG) member responsible for managing and executing the test index and schedule; test procedure issue and final acceptance; manage the NAVSEA 6010 execution; sea trial planning and execution; manage all external customers and interfaces and report overall NPE status. The ELT must have knowledge of safety requirements and coordinate with functional supervisors, waterfront construction and Ship's Force to ensure that test program is conducted safely and is accomplished in accordance with Ship Yard and NAVSEA approved requirements and procedures.

Gathers, maintains, formats, compiles, and manipulates technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes. Produces engineering documentation, reports, drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics). Performs detailed mathematical calculations using established formulas; preliminary analyses of data where guidelines are provided in such areas as trajectory adequacy, model dimensional consistency; and quantitative judgments concerning technical data. Uses personal computer in performance of analyses and development of documentation/reports. May conduct tests and record data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates Degree or other 2 year technical degree in related discipline and 6 years related experience or High School Diploma or equivalent and 8 years related experience.

  • Experience in the maintenance and operation of AN/BQQ-5/10 and AN/BSY-1

  • Prior Submarine experience with arrays, hydrophone and transducer sensors to include AI&R, ACOMMS, Sound Velocity, Noise Monitoring, Hull Array, Top and Bottom Sounders, Distress Pinger, and Spherical Arrays

  • SECRET Security Clearance required

Preferred Requirements

  • Prior US Navy experience on Los Angeles Class Submarines

  • Prior US Navy experience on Virginia Class Submarines

  • Submarine Warfare Qualification

Physical Requirements

Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the job. A waterfront office work environment is normally encountered.
