Successful candidates must live within a reasonable commute to their assigned work location or be willing to relocate to live within a reasonable commute. Relocation assistance may be available if needed .
Candidate must be available to work outside normal shift hours, during emergencies and severe weather, and be flexible to work at Atlanta (in McDonough) and Macon DCC facilities as needed.
Summary of Position Duties
The Distribution System Operator is responsible for monitoring, operating, controlling and maintaining the integrity of the electrical distribution system for Georgia Power following prescribed procedures. This role involves:
Originating and issuing all switching orders
Securing and issuing clearances and hot line tags
Gathering and interpreting information related to the status of the electrical distribution system
Respond to emergencies, such as transformer or distribution/transmission line failures, and route current around affected areas
Control, monitor or operate equipment that regulates or distributes electricity, using data obtained from instruments or computers
Coordinate & communicate with engineers, planners, field personnel, or other utility workers to provide information such as clearances, switching orders, or distribution process changes
Direct personnel engaged in controlling or operating electrical distribution equipment or machinery
Calculate load estimates or equipment requirements to determine required control settings
The Operator must have the ability to troubleshoot and exercise sound judgment related to the service restoration process. This is performed by thorough electrical systems analysis and dispatching of resources such as employees, crews, and equipment to specific customer outage areas. Competent computer skills, ability to focus on the tasks at hand, and the demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously are required for the position of Distribution System Operator. This is a safety sensitive position and all applicable corporate policies and guidelines must be followed.
This demanding, but rewarding, position requires rotating twelve hour shifts, including days, nights, weekends and holidays. In addition, availability to work outside of normal shift hours during "call out" emergencies and severe weather is required. Candidates must be comfortable working indoors, in a closed facility with no windows, at a structured work station that requires sitting/standing for long periods of time.
Successful candidate will enter the Operator-in-Training program, which consists of structured training classes along with on-the-job training AND must successfully complete the Distribution System Operator-in-Training program within the designated time frame (18 to 24 months) to maintain employment as a Distribution System Operator. Once an operator makes Level B they receive a 7% premium on the first paycheck of each month.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High School or equivalent strongly desired
2-year OR 4-year degree is a plus
Job Experience
Above average computer skills are essential for this position, including use of Microsoft Office Suite, and the ability to quickly learn TCMS, DSCADA, ARMS and CSS
Prior electrical distribution system operating and/or transmission system operating experience strongly desired
Experience as an operator (in a control room environment) or closely related experience is desired
Experience in dispatching, coordinating work of others, sharing of best practices, and maximizing resources is highly desirable
Prior callout and rotating shift experience is a plus
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of power distribution system theory, operation, relevant equipment, policies, procedures, trouble shooting and switching
Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service
Demonstrated proper etiquette for providing excellent customer service both internal and external to the company
Ability to monitor and control the activities and operation of multiple events simultaneously
Demonstrated strong multi-tasking skills is required
Proven strong diagnosis and complex problem solving skills are required
Proven high degree of accuracy and quality of work results are required
Proven excellent oral and written communication skills are required
