Job Description:

The Industrial Power Systems Division currently has a need for a Senior Design Engineer reporting to the Engineering Manager of the Engine Electronic Systems Group located in Mossville, IL. This position will be accountable for design and development of the electrical harness for the 13-18L engine size used across a wide range of Caterpillar applications.

In this role, you will work closely with broad range of engine components and electronics systems teams to drive harness designs that will meet the engine platform requirements. You will have the unique opportunity to direct and contribute to the concept, development, and design of harnesses, power cables and installations for engine systems within the C13-C18L engine sizes. You will have the opportunity to strengthen your design skills, analytical skills, and mastery of mechanical and electrical engineering concepts by partnering with other members of the design team as well as providing technical guidance to global team members.

Job Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Create and refine designs in the development of wiring harnesses, power cables and the installation of related components including installation hardware for electrical and electronic systems on engine platforms.

  • Utilize Creo to create highly integrated designs within the machine platforms

  • Collaborate with suppliers, purchasing and manufacturing representatives

  • Review CAD models, layouts, assemblies, detailed part drawings, and bills-of-material for accuracy and conformance to specifications and Caterpillar Engineering Standards

  • Utilize design tools to optimize designs for manufacturing, service support, cost, and quality.

  • Manage New Product Introduction (NPI) deliverables including, product cost targets, product reliability goals, and drawing release quality.

  • Working effectively with a global team to deliver program objectives

  • Collaborate with suppliers, global manufacturing facilities, engineering system teams and the core product groups to minimize total cost of ownership.

  • Support Continuous Product Improvement (CPI) process by modifying designs to address Product Support and Manufacturing feedback.

  • Support activities in the factory and lab including fit ups, root cause investigations and basic electrical troubleshooting.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum plus 5+ years experience in engineering

  • 5+ years of engineering experience with CAD Software.

  • Previous working knowledge of NPI and CPI process

Top Candidates Will Have:

  • Basic understanding of mechanical design concepts

  • Basic understanding of electrical systems including reading schematics

  • Hands on experience troubleshooting electrical systems

  • Design, analysis, or test experience on wiring installations or electrical systems

  • Experience with NPI, CPI, APQP, Cost, and Teamcenter tools/process

  • High level of proficiency in Creo or other modeling tools including electrical harness modeling

  • Knowledge of harness and cable manufacturing methods

  • Experience collaborating with global engineering service providers

  • Hands-on experience (e.g. machinery, heavy equipment, manufacturing processes, wiring, etc.)

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong Interpersonal & communication skills.

  • Self-starter with good multitasking skills to optimize and deliver desired results under challenging requirements of quality, cost, and timeline.

Some travel (<5%) to Suppliers and Caterpillar manufacturing facilities will be required.
