Are you passionate about research studies and analyses? Leidos is seeking an Aerospace Engineer to support intramural human use research at the Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton, OH. The successful candidate will assist in research studies and analyses to understand the human cognitive and physiological factors associated with military operations in the aviation, space, and related environments especially as they relate to motion sickness (e.g., sea-sickness, air-sickness, simulator-sickness and space-sickness), aeromedical standards, altitude effects, fatigue assessment, aviation safety, acceleration effects, neurocognitive/neurophysiological effects, and related areas. Research activities will involve human use research both in the laboratory and in the field.

The Challenge:

  • Assist in the design, development, and testing of aerospace technologies and devices to support research at NAMRU-D.

  • Conduct naval aeromedical research and development using advanced equipment, emerging technologies, or scientific phenomena.

  • Research, develop, or analyze new equipment, materials, or concepts to enhance understanding of previously unexplained or untested phenomena.

  • Interpret and develop procedures in the absence of experimental data or with controversial data to expand existing knowledge and methodologies.

  • Defend and support ideas and proposals for innovative or controversial concepts.

  • Execute test and evaluation of in support of aeromedical research objectives, including flight simulation and flight-related tasks.

  • Collect and analyze technical data, perform statistical analysis and integrate these findings into technical reports, posters, presentations, laboratory notebooks and documentation binders. Manage and coordinate research data, including independent preparation and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data. This involves performing univariate and multivariate analyses of variance, regression analysis, and descriptive summaries. Additionally, design and develop procedures for effective data management.

  • Assist with subject screening and data collection as a qualified member of the Disorientation Research Device team.

  • Work in collaboration with military and civilian researchers to design and implement research devices supporting the areas of warfighter health and performance. Including coordination of testing, maintenance of files/study records and all activities associated with internal and external audits in coordination with the PI.

  • Plan and modify research experiments, procedures, tests, or survey instruments.

  • Interact with outside customers and researchers; brief technically detailed project results to sponsors. (Subject to Government initiation and final approval).

  • Test, evaluate, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and calibrate aerospace research equipment.

  • Document all work in laboratory notebooks, technical reports, posters, and documentation binders.

  • Perform daily routine set-up and maintenance of critical human devices to include the preparation of devices for specific research protocols, operation of devices during testing and data collection, routine preventive maintenance of devices, and data collection and recording from research conducted on the devices. Devices include aircraft motion and orientation simulators, and various physiological and medical monitoring types of equipment.

What Sets You Apart:

  • Master's degree and 10 or more years of relevant experience in a related field or equivalent

  • Experience in the design, development, testing, and evaluation of aerospace technologies and devices

  • Experience in human subject research

  • Attention to detail and ability to follow all safety requirements and regulations is essential.

  • Ability to acquire and maintain, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level. Preference will be given to a candidate who already has this clearance level, but current clearance is not required.

  • Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required.

You Might Also Have:

  • Experience in a military or medical research environment is highly desired

  • Experience with military aircraft operations, flight simulation, flight test, operational test and development of aircraft systems.

  • Aviation Safety Officer or equivalent coursework.

  • Human Systems Integration training and certification.

  • Military aircraft pilot training.

  • Flight test engineer.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $122,200.00 - $220,900.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline onlyand not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
