The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

This position is an entry-level position in our Maintenance Engineering group. The successful candidate will build maintenance strategies for production equipment with the intent of maximizing mechanical availability of the machinery. Tasks include creating Operator Daily Check Lists (ODCL) to guide the operator in any simple tasks to help take care of the machine; and creating Maintenance Requirement Cards (MRC) to guide our plant maintenance technicians in preventive maintenance tasks. Depending on the criticality of the equipment, there is also potential for creating condition-based maintenance plans and/or predictive maintenance strategies. In addition, the successful candidate will also assist in the evaluation of existing equipment and development of detailed business plans for asset renewal and replacement.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 0 years of relevant exempt experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

Strong interest in understanding how production equipment works, and a desire to see the equipment work at a high level.

Basic understanding of common mechanical components, and how to maintain them.

Comfortable working in a heavy industrial environment.

Ability to build rapport and positive relationships with our production, engineering, and maintenance staffs.

Proficiency in standard office software such as email and Microsoft Office Suite.

Ability to learn and use our Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS). We use SAP Plant Maintenance Module.

Ability to write instructions in a clear, concise manner.
