What We're Looking For
This position can be located at any of our Central office locations : Kansas City, Overland Park, Oklahoma City, St. Louis, and Des Moines.
With minimal supervision develops technical freight and long range planning (including long-range transportation planning and other modal plans) solutions and strategies. Responsible for proactively overseeing other project team members in development of transportation planning solutions. May serve as a task leader on a limited basis.
Primary Focus Will Include:
General transportation planning functions
Performs commodity flow analysis.
Planning for of emerging freight technologies including but not limited to truck parking information systems, weigh-in-motion and vehicle classification, connected and autonomous vehicle technologies, etc.
Conduct freight transportation research and detailed analysis of data.
Interface with client group and community stakeholders.
Identify and recommend appropriate technical procedures that should be used on a project.
Prepare technical plans and reports.
Coordinate and interface with the project team members during the course of a project.
Assist in directing teams for small scaled projects
Prepares written reports on small to medium sized planning projects.
Responsible for significant portions of presentations and public facilitation.
May oversee the work of less experienced staff.
Coordinate with clients on a regular basis to complete assigned tasks.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
5-10 years of related professional experience.
Master's degree in Urban Planning or related field.
Transportation Planner with Freight Experience
Professional Engineer (PE), Engineer in Training (EIT), American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP), Professional Transportation Planner (PTP)
GIS and Arcview and other technical software.
Competencies:
Remains aware of new software tools available and stays current with the latest industry tools.
Integrates different sources of data to provide findings and recommendations to more experienced staff to move the project forward and determine solutions.
Provides direction to less experienced staff.
Develops a research plan and supervises the research and technical analysis of less experienced staff.
Leads the preparation of the report by writing portions of the report and reviewing and incorporating materials from others.
Manages a portion of the agenda by leading the discussion of an agenda item.
Manages ambiguity by operating effectively, even when things are not certain or the way forward is not clear.
Collaborates by building partnerships and working cooperatively with external partners (i.e., clients, sub-contractors) to meet shared objectives.
Communicates effectively by developing and delivering communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences.
Maintains customer focus by building strong client relationships and delivering client-centric solutions.
Plans, aligns, and prioritizes work to meet commitments aligned with organizational objectives.
Uses resources to find solutions and get the assignment done with a high level of independence.

What You'll Need
Essential Responsibilities:
Research data sources, gathers data, and conducts analysis of data for use in projects.
Identifies planning and analysis strategies using tools such as GIS, traffic, or safety software to manipulate data, assess scenarios, and perform project analysis.
Investigates, evaluates, and provides recommendations on planning processes and technical solutions that best meet the project needs.
Leads aspects of internal and external coordination with project team members, including other discipline areas involved with the project.
Participates in client meetings and interactions.
Leads preparation of maps, exhibits, and presentation materials for projects.
Conducts or directs research on issues, policies, and concepts pertaining to planning, and formulates recommendations.
Participates in the development of conceptual planning alternatives for urban and transportation planning projects
Writes major sections of and leads production of plans, studies, reports, and environmental documents for transportation and infrastructure projects.
Participates in public process and stakeholder facilitation.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Engineering, or related field and 4 years related professional experience
Master's Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Engineering, or related field and 3 years of relevant experience
