Caterpillar has an exciting new opportunity within IPSD for a Sr. Control Systems Engineer to support Advanced Power Products (APP) in our research and development area in Mossville, Illinois. In this position, a successful candidate will be a key member of a highly technical team providing control system and automation support for electrification efforts aimed at battery, fuel cell and microgrid technologies.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Specification, procurement and implementation of Rockwell PLC based control systems

  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting of electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems to minimize test downtime

  • Develop and implement optimal, cost-effective control automation processes

  • Develop robust supervisory control safety shutdown logic protecting facility assets, test components and employees

  • Devise and implement preventative and predictive maintenance plans to drive equipment reliability to best in class

  • Identify defects that create waste and develop innovative processes and automation to eliminate defects

  • Continually improve skills through OJT and additional personal development

  • Ability to take the initiative, provide leadership, meet deadlines and work in a team environment

  • Manage time effectively prioritizing across multiple projects and daily support efforts

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or equivalent years relevant experience

  • 5+ years of related experience

  • PLC/HMI programming and systems integration in industrial applications using various Rockwell/ Allen-Bradley hardware and software systems

  • Ability to read and create flow diagrams and electrical schematics

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Two (2) or more year's verifiable experience in PLC/HMI programming and systems integration in industrial applications using various Rockwell/ Allen-Bradley hardware and software systems

  • General knowledge of networking and communication protocols, such as EtherNet, Remote I/O, Data Highway, RSLinx

  • Strong background using Ladder Logic, structured text, or function block programming techniques

  • Demonstrated troubleshooting capabilities in electric, mechanical and hydraulic systems in a testing environment

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD

  • General knowledge of instrumentation and data acquisition

  • General knowledge of programming and configuring Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)

  • General knowledge of, or interest in, drivetrain test and development

  • Must be able to work unsupervised and as part of a team as required

  • General knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)

  • Basic VBA programming skill

  • Experience with electric drive systems and/or components

  • Solid organizational and facilitation skills

  • Excellent communication skills; oral, written and listening
