Description

The purpose of this position is to manage individual large to medium scale fixed asset projects associated with the Southern Company Gas Project Management Organization (PMO). This position will be responsible for managing the initiation, planning, execution and closing of projects involved with pipeline and associated pipeline facility construction. In addition, this position will be responsible for managing and controlling the capital expenditures associated with the work. The position will lead cross functional teams requiring significant coordination with internal and external stakeholders such as Project Controls, Engineering, Construction, Land, Environmental, Operations, System Planning, GIS, Corrosion, Project Controls and associated contractors. The incumbent in this position applies PMO strategies, protocols and techniques for managing and executing projects and utilizes the Company's Asset Development Process (ADP).

Functional Expertise:

  • Act as Project Manager for PMO projects

  • Implement PMO business processes on all assigned projects

  • Work with contractors and representatives from applicable functional areas to meet project goals

  • Where applicable, follow Asset Development Process (ADP) to ensure meaningful structure exists to meet departmental and company objectives

  • Ensure detailed project records are organized and maintained through the life of the project

  • Track projects from concept through to completion with responsibility for tracking scope, schedule, and cost variances

  • Implement KPIs and support Continuous Improvement efforts

Business Acumen:

  • Define roles and responsibilities for project teams

  • Ensure requirements and standards for project reporting are followed

  • Define project scope and baseline execution

  • Ensure compliance with Company policies and procedures

  • Identify and properly manage project risks

  • Manage project contractors per PMO procedures

  • Provide proper oversight for project team members and their activities

  • Lead or participate in project bidding and contract negotiation activities

  • Ensure that materials and services are acquired for project as needed per the schedule

  • Ensure requisitions are entered into the procurement system with appropriate accounting code and follow appropriate approval process

  • Ensure that contractor invoices and payments are reviewed and compliant per contract

Engagement:

  • Collaborate with functional team members including Engineering, Construction, GIS, Operations, Land, Environmental, Project Controls, System Planning, Supply Chain, Communications, Community Affairs, Regulatory, and other leaders as needed on projects

  • Ensure that qualified contractors are identified and contracted as needed

  • Prepare and present project metrics to indicate project health (EVA, Financial Analysis, Schedule, Risk, etc.) for presentation to business owner and management

  • Ensure that scope changes are appropriately addressed per the Change Management process

  • Identify and establish project team resources

  • Hold project team meetings on a regular basis

  • Lead or participate in drafting contracts and performing final review of all project-related contracts prior to execution

  • Network best practices with other project managers including providing guidance and mentoring where appropriate

Driving Results:

  • Lead development of project schedules utilizing Project Controls Scheduler or other resource

  • Ensure proper Project Controls tools are utilized to keep projects within annual budget and project funding approvals

  • Lead projects through the Asset Development Process Stages as applicable including Stage Gate Reviews

  • Lead project teams through Lessons Learned review at each project Stage, and when appropriate follow through on broader process improvement initiatives

  • Ensure that project job records, as-builts, other job documentation are secured from internal and external parties and are distributed to appropriate Office of Record for permanent retention

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

  • BA/BS in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical)

  • Or other relevant work experience

Preferred:

  • MBA, Project Management Professional (PMI), Professional Engineer (PE)

    Related Work Experience:

Required:

  • 5 years' experience working in the natural gas transmission or related energy field

  • 3 years leading project planning and execution

  • Contractor management

Preferred:

  • Project Management experience

  • Experience managing projects designed and executed within an existing operating plant

  • Experience managing compression projects for underground storage applications

  • Direct personnel supervision

Applicant may possess a combination of equivalent education and work experience.

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required:

  • Strong engineering and construction knowledge. Prefer knowledge of natural gas transmission systems, natural gas distribution systems, gas engineering principles and theories, and DOT pipeline safety regulations

  • Strong understanding of the integrity management assessment process

  • MS Office - intermediate proficiency

  • Ability to manage multiple projects under stressful conditions

  • Ability to use project management tools and methods (e.g., earned value analysis, critical path scheduling, project administration, establishing project teams)

  • Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization

  • Ability to influence and persuade in decision making

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Position is located in an office environment

  • Periodic field presence at construction sites

  • Occasional travel to other Company or vendor locations
