Job Description

  • GENERAL SUMMARY

  • The Director reports to the Vice President of Patient Care Services/Chief Nursing Officer and to the Vice President for Mental Health Services. Works collaboratively with the Director, Mental Health Service Line and the Medical Director for Mental Health. Has overall responsibility for daily planning, work scheduling, managing designated service personnel, and coordinating and directing the workflow and functions of the Mental Health acute inpatient unit. Promotes the safety, efficiency, and optimization of clinical practices. The director retains 24-hour responsibility, but may utilize supervisory staff to operationalize activities. Delegates to and supervises personnel, solves problems, makes decisions and develops systems and processes for successful integration and implementation. Independently carries out and is accountable for daily operations and other negotiated/assigned activities. Seeks guidance from the vice presidents for unusual or unanticipated circumstances that require deviation from financial/operational policies and standards of practice.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facilitates collaborative partnerships with Mental Health staff to ensure service line development, management, and growth.

  • Provides leadership and direction for acute inpatient mental health units.

  • Accountable for overall operation, direction and delivery of patient care that promotes safety and well-being of all patients on a twenty-four hour basis.

  • Implements evidence based nursing practice to achieve operational excellence, facilitating respectful and productive interdisciplinary collaborations, promoting and monitoring a culture of efficient, results and customer oriented services, as well as coordinating staff educational opportunities and certification processes.

  • Directs and manages contracted services to meet patient and organization needs

  • In collaboration with Director, Mental Health Service Line, manages research and programmatic grants for service area, develops processes to promote quality of service, budgetary compliance, and provides leadership to other team members.

  • A high level of independence in performance of the role and/or solution of problems is expected, however, demonstrated cooperation and collaboration is equally essential for successful functioning.

  • Monitors operations and quality standards to assure compliance with governmental regulations and the established standards of accrediting agencies, including federal research regulations.

  • Maintains appropriate standards of nursing practice and standards of care throughout the Mental Health units.

  • Independently carries out and is accountable for daily operations and other activities as assigned.

  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license.

  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Master's degree in Nursing required; may be substituted with a Master's in Business Administration, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or related field provided the candidate also possesses a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (Candidates currently enrolled in a Master's program will be considered. Individual must complete program within one year).

  • Minimum of five years of progressive mental health care leadership experience in a setting committed to collaborative decision making and team development required.

  • Professional knowledge of areas of responsibility to include theory, practice and administration in order to direct planning and implementation.

  • Strong background in clinical research and regulatory compliance necessary.

  • Previous experience in managing research grants and clinical contracts.

  • Requires analytical skills necessary to organize and oversee work of subordinates.

  • Increased Security Clearance Required for Job Roles in Medical Tower II: FBI fingerprinting, criminal background check, and Child Protective Services registry search.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like.
