Job Description:
The Aerojet Rocketdyne Business Segment of L3Harris is seeking an Associate Manager, Materials and Process Engineering to join our growing Huntsville, Alabama organization. This position will provide leadership to the Materials and Processes Engineering (MPE) Laboratory team in supporting the Advanced Manufacturing Facilities (AMF) in meeting day-to-day production demands. Performs quality process control tests, problem resolution/failure analysis testing, and age life extension for limited life materials. In addition, the laboratory provides results of testing and analysis to support Engineering development work in support of MPE as well as other Engineering and Quality functions. This position will report to the Senior Manager, Materials and Processes Engineering in Huntsville, AL.
Essential Functions:
Attend the production managers' daily stand-up meetings to understand the current state of production priorities and the shifts that invariably occur.
Coordinate, lead, and direct the laboratory efforts to ensure the priorities of production are met. Review the results of the laboratory to ensure consistent and reliable output.
Maintain a good working relationship with the production areas, as their support is required for preparing samples, machining, handling, cold storage, etc.
Maintain laboratory equipment through renewal of equipment service plans.
Maintain a 5 year capital plan for equipment replacement, increased capability and capacity as required.
Communicate with parties within and outside of own job function/area, which includes internal/external customers and suppliers as required
Develop/maintain work instructions for new and current processes to standardize and document test procedures utilized throughout the lab.
Improve laboratory function through process improvement using e3 principles, mentorship and 5S+1.
Maintain testing records and ensure operational readiness regarding reagent stock, lab cleanliness, and compliance with calibration and safety.
Technically advise staff in developing and validating analytical methods for testing materials via thermal analysis techniques (TGA, DSC and TMA) and wet chemical analysis (titration, gravimetry, etc).
Successfully complete and execute a lab move to a new AMF facility and ensure lab capabilities are in place to support new program introduction in Huntsville.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree with a minimum 6 years prior relevant Materials and Processes Engineering experience.
Graduate Degree with a minimum of 4 years of prior related Materials and Processes Engineering experience.
In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related Materials and Processes Engineering experience.
Preferred Additional Skills:
Experience with polymeric materials, rheology, statistical analysis, and the listed instruments used to characterize properties of polymeric materials or their precursors.
Knowledge of mechanical test equipment to include electro-mechanical test frames (Instron, MTS, etc) and deformation measuring equipment (extensometers, LVDTs, etc.)
Knowledge of chemical principles, thermodynamics, polymer chemistry, structure/property relationships, kinetics, and data analysis is essential.
Knowledge of industry standards utilized for testing materials.
