Telecom Analyst/Engineer (Hybrid role)

Description

*This position will be a hybrid role which will be primarily remote and the successful candidate can reside anywhere within the Southern Company's electric footprint*

JOB SUMMARY:

This position exists in the Telecom Core Services group inside the Telecom Services organization. The position is responsible for system level support and field engineering of Southern Company's telecommunications transport systems and infrastructure. This includes support of the Company's DWDM, and SONET Telecom systems from both a 24x7 operations and project implementation perspective. This position is expected to assist in the evaluation and administration of the Telecommunications Enterprise Change Management process, manage projects, assignments, and requests with minimal oversight and to effectively interface with multiple cross-functional parties on a frequent basis. i.e.: Infrastructure Operations Center, Telecom Engineering- Aggregation Services, Telecom Engineering-Edge Services, Field Operations, PD Specialized Infrastructure, SoLINC, as well as OPCO Power Delivery and external vendors and partners.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education / Experience:

  • Two-year degree in an electronics technology or equivalent experience in the telecommunications field is required.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in electronics technology or engineering is preferred.

  • 2 - 4 years' experience in a similar role, Network Services, Field Operations technician role is preferred

  • Proven track record in support of engineering designs, problem resolution and project implementation is expected

  • General knowledge of infrastructure components

  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art telecommunications equipment, facilities, troubleshooting techniques and concepts

  • Ability to negotiate with and influence others - internally as well as vendors

Technical / Leadership skills:

  • Understand/achieve business, Technology Organization, and departmental goals, strategies, and plans

  • Ensure full compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley rules and regulations

  • Understanding of Change Management processes & workflow with the ability to manage the risk associated with maintaining and operating the Telecommunications systems across the service territory.

  • In-depth knowledge of DWDM plus one or more of the following telecommunications transport technologies: SONET, SEL ICON, Nokia SARs or other similar Data Networking routers, GPON, fiber optics (electronics and cable), multiplex / DACS / CPE and Microwave.

  • Solid technical understanding of data networks, voice networks, SCADA, and other major applications that use Southern telecommunications network

  • Ability to analyze information from multiple sources for complex problem resolution

  • Ability to lead a team, coordinating various workgroups to drive complex problem resolution in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Ability to design / engineer network modifications / additions from a field perspective

  • Ability to organize tasks and coordinate various employees, vendor / contractors, and customers / partners to meet project goals

  • Ability to work independently, prioritizing major tasks by overall impact to the company

  • Ability to arrive at cost effective solutions in support of outages and projects

  • Ability to communicate and work with all levels of management, vendors, and other internal and external groups and customers

  • Ability to effectively lead meetings, train personnel, and make presentations

  • Ability to effectively utilize standard Company computing applications (i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)

  • Ability to appropriately utilize documentation tools as required by specific job (Remedy, Visio, etc.)

The Telecom job requires the ability to drive long distances, travel overnight, be subject to 24x7 call out, work shifts greater than 8 hrs, lift / carry items up to approx. 50 lbs, climb stairs / ladders, and work in areas requiring specific safety measures such as radio transmission sites, fiber optic transmission sites, power plants, substations, transmission right - of- ways, as well as various remote locations.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary responsibilities include Telecom Change Management process oversight from a telecom systems technical perspective, field engineering, 3rd level Telecom problem resolution, field level project management / implementation oversight, engineering support, preventative maintenance development and support, field level or formal training delivery, and quality assurance as required to support project and operational goals of the Company's telecommunications transport network.
