The Cloud Infrastructure Business Group (CIBG) is responsible for developing and delivering core Virtualization products such as vSphere, Workstation, Fusion, vSAN and VMware Cloud foundation, the platform for hybrid cloud. The vSAN team is part of Cloud Infrastructure Organization and is responsible for providing an enterprise-class, storage virtualization software that, when combined with vSphere, allows customers to manage compute and storage with a single platform. The storage virtualization software involves developing distributed storage system which is highly available, scalable, performant, and fault tolerant. The VMware's vSAN offering is Gartner Magic Quadrant Leader in Hyperconverged Infrastructure Software.
Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months that you will work towards completing?
Within 1 month of employment, becomes familiar with VMware's product offerings, get started with setting up product development environment and other tools related to doing the work.
Within 3 months of employment learn and understand vSAN which you will be working on, the technology stack which they use, get accustomed with the code base and ramp up by taking the help of an assigned mentor and other members of the team, participate in all team scrum activities.
Within 6 months of employment, work towards contributing to code changes and code reviews around various features that the team is currently working on.
Within 1 year of employment, begin contributing to the on-going functional design spec, contribute to product and testing and tools development, work towards owning and driving new feature development.
The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
The vSAN team is looking for a developer to work on next generation file system project. The engineer will be part of the vSAN core team responsible for developing new vSAN features and products based on an enterprise-class virtualization platform. The team member will work with architects, product management teams and other stakeholders across sites to design and develop new features and products. They will also collaborate with the Quality Engineers to ensure the quality of the developed products. Duties will include design, implementation, testing, and debugging. The engineer will also interact with other core engineering teams and groups outside of engineering in Storage and Availability Business Unit in helping analyze and prioritize product features, interact with partners, and enablement.
In a typical day...
Design and develop the next generation of storage virtualization products.
Work for complex distributed systems algorithms.
Work on networking protocols native to VSAN and can debug vmkernel networking stack.
Work with VMware kernel and management teams to ensure that features work seamlessly end-to-end, and maintain product extensibility and compatibility.
Work with Quality Engineers and ensure software testability, quality and stability.
Work with the documentation team and ensure good quality documentation of the product and API.

What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?
This position reports to the Director of the VSAN team, an experienced software manager who has been working at VMware on multiple different projects/products. The team consists of highly competent engineers - a good mix of junior, mid-level and senior engineers. We focus on iterative development, both of software and our software development practices. The team culture is one based on sharing knowledge for ongoing development, building trust and participating in social events along with giving back to the community through service learning.

The role is based in the US with the option of working remotely or in our Palo Alto, California office.
