The time is right to join HNTB Corporation! We are seeking candidates to lead our Environmental Design Group from our Milwaukee, Madison or Green Bay offices. The successful candidate will lead a growing practice including planning and design services related to green infrastructure, water resources, drainage and stormwater management. The HNTB environmental services group works with clients such as Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District (MMSD), Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) and the City of Milwaukee. The group also serves as a lead for internal HNTB infrastructure related projects including, but not limited to bridges, highways, flood and hurricane protection systems, rail and transit projects, water resource projects, airports, stadiums, and major utility projects throughout the U.S.

Job Description Summary:

Responsible for direction, supervision and growth of the environmental design practice group in Wisconsin, which currently consists of approximately 15 employees. Responsible for leading a professional and technical multi-discipline group in the planning, design, development and delivery of project tasks while managing scope, budget, and quality control. Oversees departments and sections financial metrics to ensure adherence with the group's goals and in align with office expectations. The Group Director collaborates with leadership across the office and division to apply the firm's strategic sales and planning approaches while assisting with project pursuits and proposals. This position coordinates project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the proper resources at the appropriate time. Responsible for technical coaching and mentoring and efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high-quality service. Group Directors are typically responsible for up to 40 direct and indirect reports.

Primary Focus Will Include:

Oversee project management activities, including the work of various project managers as well as the development of project scope, schedule, budget and quality management for the entire group. Develop a strategy and vision to grow the Environmental Design practice in Wisconsin; grow our Environmental practice around the following core areas:

  • Develop client and project pursuit strategies

  • Train, develop and grow existing staff

  • Develop and manage strategic partnerships and teaming opportunities

  • Hire and manage staff project placement

  • Create a timeline for growth

  • Identify key investments needed to implement the plan and lead the Environmental Practice group

  • Coordinate closely with the Office Leader and other departments (Traffic, Transportation, Construction, Structures and Planning) on staffing needs

  • Coordinate with the local client service teams on existing and future opportunities

  • Coordinate with the Great Lakes Division and National Environmental Practice Resources as needed

  • Maintain and develop client relationships including obtaining client feedback on staff performance

  • Project Delivery: Actively manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.Typically, responsible for up to 40 direct and indirect reports.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • 15 years of practical experience

  • Master's degree

  • 6 years supervisory experience

  • Certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) or American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) or Project Management Professional (PMP)

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Directs and supervises the development and management of the operating budgets for the departments within the Group and coordination with the office's budget.

  • Responsible for the oversight of the group (multiple departments) activities, establish priorities and assign staff to projects. Collaborate with other groups, offices and divisions on work-sharing needs and opportunities.

  • Drives the implementation of the firm's strategic plan and HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) process on project pursuits and markets with the Group and office, including development of strategic planning strategies.

  • Drives the implementation of the firm's contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities including scope, work plan and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the group.

  • Drives the implementation of the firm's project delivery (SDA) process including Work Planning, Monthly Project Reviews and other project performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, to the client's satisfaction.

  • Assists in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win-to-work activities

  • Maintains client contacts to ensure client satisfaction. Leads and assists in sales and marketing efforts for department's growth.

  • Assists in the development and execution of the office strategic plan. May participate of the Office Leadership Team (OLT)

  • Recruits, hires, develops and retains department staff within the group, including supporting Department Managers with the development of plans for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession planning.

  • Manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering with 12 years of practical experience including 4 years of supervisory experience
