Environmental Waste Specialist or Engineer

Relocation MAY be available IF needed and IF you qualify.

There will be approximately 75% travel in this position to GA Power facilities across the state of GA. (Only 25% of this travel will be overnight)

You MUST live within commutable distance of Metro Atlanta, GA as you will be required to attend necessary meetings.

JOB SUMMARY

Responsibilities include developing, communicating, and implementing special waste related environmental programs, guidelines, and compliance strategies for company business units and facilities. This position will be expected to represent the Company before regulatory agencies, external groups, and the public. Responsibilities include project management, training development, obtaining permits and licenses, reporting monitoring results, and performing compliance program reviews and audits.

The position is located in Atlanta, Georgia.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Familiarity with and/or ability to learn and interpret environmental regulations/requirements including Georgia Solid Waste Management Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA), Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Recovery Act (CERCLA) including Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA), Georgia Hazardous Sites Response Act, Georgia Hazardous Waste Management Act, Georgia Asbestos Safety Act, and others.

  • Support efforts to attain environmental permits, licenses, and certifications. Develop cost effective compliance strategies and programs for waste and remediation related regulations and permits, including developing Environmental Guidelines and appropriate communications and training. Specific responsibilities may include duties associated with, supporting ash pond closures, plant decommissioning, hazardous waste management, special waste handling, and other waste related tasks.

  • Monitor environmental legislative and regulatory activities that impact company operations. Provide interface and input to Southern Company environmental personnel regarding federal or industry environmental issues.

  • Work with appropriate regulatory agencies and external groups to promote informed, balanced, and science-based regulations and permit requirements.

  • Support and monitor Company compliance with various environmental programs with program reviews. Make observations and decisions as to the effectiveness of compliance activities and report those observations and decisions to environmental management and business units.

  • Support personnel with compliance assessments at customer facilities, as needed. Work as a team with other Environmental Analysts, Engineers, and Specialists to develop and implement cost-effective solutions and services for environmental risks.

  • Develop partnerships with all levels of business unit and facilities management to implement low cost and effective environmental programs.

  • Support the Company's environmental policies in all areas, including environmental stewardship initiatives.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of applicable environmental laws and regulations.

  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills; able to synthesize technical information and communicate in a manner suitable for technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Ability to work with limited supervision and maintain a flexible schedule which may include non-traditional hours and travel.

  • Judgment skills necessary to make decisions, solve problems, and implement solutions.

  • Project and contract management.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • BS or BA degree in engineering or a science related field (i.e., biology, chemistry, environmental science, etc).

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 4 plus years of experience in environmental waste and/or remediation.

  • Experience in interpreting environmental regulations and interaction with regulators.

  • Familiarity with hazardous waste and toxic substance regulations, performing waste determinations, and coordinating compliance reporting.

  • Experience in working with interdisciplinary teams.

  • Background or experience in power plant operations and/or power delivery is a plus.

  • Environmental Management Information System experience is a plus.
