WORK LOCATION & TRAVEL
This position will be based in Birmingham, AL or Atlanta, GA and will utilize a hybrid approach to work. Successful candidates are expected to be in the office or at a field location three days per week (or as needed) and can work remotely the remaining two days of the week.
Some relocation assistance is available if the selected candidate currently resides outside the Birmingham and/or Atlanta areas.
Travel expectations - up to 50% per year, to include both office and field locations as dictated by business need.
Travel will include both day-trips and overnight.
Extended trips (up to 5 days) may be necessary.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
The Ash Pond Project Engineer is responsible for managing technical activities related to utility Customer's Coal Combustion Residual (CCR) and ash pond closure projects. Dependent on experience and qualifications, the Engineer could also be responsible for coordinating a multi-disciplinary team to deliver quality engineering packages on time and on schedule. This individual will focus on technical oversight and coordination of the design and engineering of the ash pond closure projects, as well as managing external contracts related to quality assurance and engineering activities. The Engineer could also oversee and coordinate an OPCo wide, field, Instrumentation and/or Quality Assurance role to be sure consistency and compliance with project plans and specifications was upheld.
Building and maintaining a positive working relationship with project stakeholders is critical in this role. Effective communication skills and a familiarity with ash pond construction projects and engineering design are required.
This individual will interface regularly with internal Customers to ensure timely communication of issues. They will also help drive consistency in the application of lessons learned, processes, and procedures.
The candidate must be able to build relationships and foster trust.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Geoenvironmental, Geological Engineering, or another related field from an ABET accredited program
Minimum of 5 years work experience in engineering, earth sciences, construction, or another related field
Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification on track for professional registration
Project Management Professional (PMP) and/or Professional Engineer (PE) certification, preferred
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Familiarity with the requirements of the Federal and State Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) rules.
Experience in engineering design and construction project support, particularly experience related to CCR, dam, and/or landfills work
Contractor field oversight experience related to plan and specifications
Direct experience in the areas related to CCR work, including, but not limited to: Ash Pond Safety, CCR Closure Methodology, CCR Material Properties, CCR Beneficial Use, Geotechnical Instrumentation, Quality Control and Quality Assurance, and Cover Systems, preferred
Strong oral communication and writing skills
Strong presentation skills
