Position Objective:
ITW Drawform & Sexton is a $200M USD Division within Illinois Tool Works' Automotive Segment. It has an excellent reputation for delivering top results and exceeding customer expectations within the deep draw and aerosol can industries. The Division has been granted a multi-year project that requires an Automation Engineer to help manage the launch and, subsequently, the long-term electric vehicle efforts within the division. This newly created position is a member of ITW Drawform & Sexton Division's new product launch team in the EV market and will require frequent interaction with both internal and external stakeholders. This internship position is located at our Decatur, AL facility which is a world leader in the production of two-piece aerosol cans and deep-drawn metal filter shells for automotive and specialty applications. This position could lead to full time employment after the 12 - 16 week internship period.
This hands-on Automation Engineering Intern role will have responsibility of newly installed automated lines and the responsibility for launching future automated lines within the facility. The scope of the job includes designing automated assembly solutions, setting up the processes and controls, optimizing the processes and maintaining the specific processes. The role will ensure the lines meet production requirements and will liaise with all departments, external contractors and customers. The candidate will work directly with engineers and technicians, and can expect to gain valuable hands-on experience developing industrial control systems and designing electrical control panels that are a critical part of these systems. The intern will benefit from hands on exposure to PLC and HMI (Human Machine Interface) programming.
Essential Functions:
Works with external suppliers to select the correct equipment to meet the required performance parameters
Defines process parameters and optimizes the parameters using data analysis
Performs daily reviews of system data and scrap rates and makes appropriate corrections or adjustments to the lines in a timely manner to ensure operational efficiencies are maintained
Develops and monitors planning timetables and project schedules
Analyzes product, process, and technology to figure out the best methods of manufacture
Assist in the design and building and implementation of internal automation projects, as well as any external projects for production; recommends improvements to existing process
Provides input/feedback on associated design criteria
Creates and updates maintenance guidelines, training of operators and maintenance colleagues and communicates appropriately with internal resources. Updates production & maintenance documentation.
Maintains OSHA and regulatory compliance for design, manufacture and operations of automation and controls.
Performs line setup and supports prototype and development requirements.
Identifies, justifies, and implements new technology and manufacturing techniques to improve safety/ergonomics, reduce manufacturing costs (labor, material, inventory, scrap), and improve product/process quality
. Present at the end of the term in front of a small group of people showcasing what was worked on.
. Desire and ability to learn Controls Engineering concepts and methodology.
. Ability to read and interpret standard operating procedures/ instructions/ blueprints/mechanical drawings.
. Understanding of basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, calculations of percentages, measurement conversions).
. Ability to comprehend specifications provided within orders and translate them to the desired parts per blueprint orders.
. Progress toward a bachelor's or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineer Tech or a similar degree.
. Rising junior or above with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
. Interest and ability to work on the production shop floor
. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
. Ability to work with minimal supervision
. Desire to learn, question, and research solutions to problems.
. Organized with the ability to manage deadlines.
. Good verbal and written communication skills as well the ability to utilize MS Teams to participate in meetings.
. Knowledge of and/or experience with networks (Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, ProfiNet, etc.)
. Knowledge of and/or experience with PLC programming (preferably Allen Bradley)
. Ability to read an electrical schematic
. Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with varying levels of the organization
. Preferred candidates will reside and/or attend college or university in the Northern Alabama area.
