The Role
This position reviews all required technical documents and coordinates fueling/refueling operations on assigned shift. This position maintains frequent/daily contact with the Ships Engineering Staff, Project Engineering Support Staff, Reactor Plant Contractors Office, Naval Reactors Office, the Supervisor of Shipbuilding and Supervisors of Trades, RADCON, QID and Production Departments. An incumbent may perform any or all of the following activities in support of these responsibilities: Fuelings/Refuelings. Responsibilities include initial design, checkout, installation, operation and maintenance of reactor servicing equipment, facilities and support systems; Develops Reactor Servicing procedures and provides technical direction for complex operations being performed either shipboard or in dockside facilities; Exercises on-scene technical control of all types of reactor servicing work. Acts as a consultant to other engineering projects on matters involving Reactor Servicing Operations or Policies. Provides technical assistance to shipyard trades and inspection personnel performing work on reactor servicing equipment and facilities; Conducts on-site review of production work to ensure all contractual, technical and safety requirements are fulfilled; Coordinates all phases of Reactor Servicing Operations, ensuring work meets scheduler constraints and is accomplished in an efficient and safe manner; Evaluates and resolves maintenance problems encountered on fueling/refueling equipment. Reviews equipment, facilities and procedures for technical adequacy and identification of potential; Represents the shipyard interacting with outside representatives and activities. Determines both time and method for halting ongoing work resulting from procedure deficiencies, equipment failures or personnel errors. Responsible for the initiation of immediate corrective actions to deal with abnormal (casualty) situations and developing proposed corrective actions to the CRE/ACRE.
This position is part of the Newport News Shipbuilding Reactor Servicing Operations group, responsible for providing direct engineering oversight to service Navy nuclear reactors. Reactor Servicing offers a challenging, high paced, team environment with opportunity to excel and endless possibilities for professional growth. It is required that candidates for this position hold or be able to qualify as Navy Nuclear Program Shift Refueling Engineer. Candidates for this position must have the willingness to support all shifts with weekend/holiday availability when required. The candidate selected for this position should be available to qualify across platforms to include New Construction and Refueling/Defueling. Reactor Servicing - Excellence at the Core.
Must Have
Shift Refueling Engineer (SRE) Certification and 4 years of relevant professional/exempt experience.
