This Opportunity
Seeking energetic Engineering Team Leader to guide the growth of our site civil and environmental engineering practice in the Richmond, VA office . Provides technical and career-growth leadership to our staff of engineers and CAD designers, along with client and project management for a broad range of power, commercial, and municipal customers.
Duties include the execution, management, and oversight of various civil projects related to solid waste, coal combustion residuals (CCR) management facilities, leachate and wastewater management, earthwork design, stormwater design, geotechnical evaluation, subsurface investigation, environmental permitting, and other civil designs associated with industrial projects. Project delivery and management will require deliverables preparation (reports, permit applications, construction drawings), budget and schedule management, billing and project tracking, and interaction with other WSP offices, clients, subcontractors, and regulators. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
Your Impact
Assume leadership and mentoring role for an established group of engineers and CAD designers, providing career development, technical guidance, and strategic team growth.
Apply high-level civil and environmental engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various site development/redevelopment project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
Lead and perform professional civil and environmental engineering work and conduct complex/ comprehensive investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, facilities, site grading, stormwater drainage, water supply, pipelines, groundwater and soil pollution sources, buildings, and power plants to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans; and update infrastructure layout plans that require coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
Provide oversight for collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, hydrologic analysis, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
Involved from project inception to completion in the management of design and construction of infrastructure projects, including grading, drainage, solid waste facility design, remediation, rehabilitation and reconstruction, specifications, building materials, phasing, and construction safety plans.
Develop and incorporate advanced technologies, monitoring devices, building materials, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, sitewide stormwater flow, remediation, and implementing future-ready solutions with civil engineering design standards.
Assist with engineering review of permit applications, engineering design plans and specifications, standby plans and engineering contracts, integrated waste management plans, and periodic construction inspections, to ensure that they comply with applicable state and/or federal regulations and sound engineering practice and standards.
Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, cross-sections, and other illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of more complex data, findings, or analyses.
Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, concepts, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or address engineering, design, and/or construction issues or opportunities.
Analyze, evaluate, and interpret data obtained during field investigations, offering input with developing action plans for moderate- to high-level risk mitigation activities.
Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
Collaborate with professionals, other engineers, planners, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.
Remain current in latest civil and environmental engineering techniques and practices.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Environmental, or Geotechnical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
7+ years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and civil design.
Virginia Professional Engineer license required (multi-state preferred).
Ability to lead, manage, mentor, and grow a staff of engineers and CAD designers.
Proficient with civil and environmental engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.
Extensive knowledge of site civil/grading, stormwater drainage, and solid waste facility design.
Experience with land disturbance and sitewide stormwater planning, design, and construction management; including active involvement in a variety of rehabilitation, new design, and construction projects.
Experience with regulations and requirements related to the Virginia Stormwater Management Program (VSMP), regulated land disturbance activities and related site planning/permitting, Virginia Runoff Reduction Method (VRRM), energy balance, stormwater quality and quantity analysis and compliance specifically in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Experience with groundwater and soil remediation, including knowledge of conventional and innovative remedial technologies, contaminant assessment and delineation, equipment evaluation and specification
Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of facilities or structures, applying applicable regulations and policies
Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
Highly proficient with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS), technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Occasional travel (10%) may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
