Summary You will serve as a Transportation Assistant (Freight) in the Supply Management Department of NAVSUP FLT LOGISTICS CNTR JACKSONVILLE at Gulfport, MS. Responsibilities You will have knowledge of all HAZMAT handling procedures, from receipt, stow, issue and transportation of material. You will prepare complete en route instructions for materials being shipped by providing information on the shipment size, shape, weight, packing requirements, and compatibility for consolidation. You will prepare cost comparisons to determine the most cost-effective mode and determines which is the low-cost carrier. You will examine items received to verify identity, quantity, and control number to ensure items match received documentation. You will independently determine the materials, containers, devices, and preservatives needed to prepare specialized materials and equipment for custom packing, shipment, and storage. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector; performing Transportation Assistant work that demonstrates the knowledge and application of an extensive body of transportation regulations, methods, and practices to perform a wide variety of interrelated or nonstandard transportation support assignments related to extremely fragile, hazardous, temperature controlled and sensitive material, as well as, high priority shipments; I have experience utilizing a technical knowledge of freight classification in order to classify hazardous freight, as well as the knowledge required to utilize all modes of transportation. I have resolved wide ranges of problems in connection with the shipment of government material and equipment. Examples of specialized experience may include: 1) Classifying materials into appropriate categories, and identifying the need for special packing, loading, or handling, and coordinating arrangements for these needs with other activity personnel as well as with carriers; 2) Preparing complete en route instructions for materials being shipped (shipment size, shape, weight, packaging requirements, etc.; 3) Determining the most cost effective mode of transportation; 4) Arranging for complete routings to handle shipments with urgent delivery dates, or shipments to isolated origin or destination points that cannot be transported through normal channels; and 5) Utilizing automated information systems to input a range of standard information or track shipments.
