The Engineering Specialist - Technical Regulatory Compliance is a position in a specialized field and contributes to Enterprise regulatory compliance and safety teams, as well as committees or groups outside of the company. This position is focused on providing support for mobile machine products using electrified powertrain along with electric power products and energy storage systems. The primary focus is on delivery of technical support and guidance to new product developments driven by the energy transformation (rechargeable energy storage systems, electric drive systems, high voltage applications). Direct work with other units and teams requires the incumbent demonstrate skill in negotiation, building consensus and achieving compromise. Ability to address all levels of clients or internal process partners is key. Impact of decisions made by this position may be far-reaching, to include the project team or immediate work group, division and/or business unit, suppliers, internal and external customers, and Caterpillar markets. Decisions may significantly impact safety, warranty, patents, products or processes, technology, costs, sales and customer perceptions.
Strong communication, social, political, leadership, project management and business management skills are essential. Major challenges facing incumbents are keeping up to date with regulatory compliance requirements and technology by comprehending complex text and concepts from journals, industry standards and regulations and demonstrating technical expertise in specialty areas. This position must demonstrate the ability to develop and manage a complex project to plan. Technical leadership skills are essential. The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively across the organization and create professional interactions with external contacts and groups.
Job Duties
Key areas of responsibility encountered in this role include contributing to established tools and process to manage product safety and compliance; performing product safety reviews in-iron and virtually, reviewing technical publications such as Operations & Maintenance Manuals and Special Instructions to ensure safety and compliance related matters have been properly addressed; keeping up to date on new industry standards and regulatory compliance requirements; communicating technology to team members and clients; supporting and advising other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, customers and suppliers, mentoring, coaching and developing others, representing the company externally in global standards developing organizations and industry associations.
Technical Regulatory Compliance Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of regulatory compliance requirements and technology. The Engineering Specialist - Technical Regulatory Compliance should have deep technical expertise in the electrical and electronic field with experience in high voltage applications such as electric drive systems, battery and/or fuel cell-based propulsion systems, mains powered equipment, and general electrical / electronic systems used on mobile machines, engine and power systems. Individuals in this position will also want to focus on gaining increased knowledge of the business including financial aspects and aftermarket growth strategies. Other skills critical to this position are verbal and written communication skills, risk assessment, failure analysis and problem-solving skill, spatial and conceptual design skill, product and process definition skill and knowledge of Caterpillar products and those of the competition.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or Engineering Technology from an accredited college or university
10+ years of job-related experience in engineering
Top Candidates will also have
Experience participating in an international standard developing organization
Engineering development or validation experience with mobile machine electrical systems
Control System Functional Safety experience
Experience operating earth-moving machinery
Experience as an electrical contractor or industrial electrician
Excellent analytical skills
Extensive understanding of complex engineering concepts and applications
Self-starter, strong technical skills, and leadership skills
Ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the work group, as well employees in other units, customers, and suppliers
