Job Description

The purpose of this position is to support the Corporate Sustainability department, through helping to manage sustainability and ESG reporting, policy and engagement efforts for Southern Company Gas, coordinate the preparation for external and internal speaking engagements, management and Board meetings, and other sustainability-related engagements, coordinate industry trade meeting deliverables, policy efforts and engagement, and support the cross-functional coordination of net zero strategy and implementation efforts. This position will be responsible for several strategic initiatives within the sustainability organization including market intelligence and data analytics. The successful candidate will have a critical role in the company's efforts to develop and implement sustainability and ESG programs and projects, as well as manage department coordination, education and engagement. This position will partner with the sustainability and renewable gas teams, as well as other internal and external teams, to effectuate the Company's sustainability strategy.

Functional Expertise:

  • Track developments and best practices related to ESG and sustainability for the natural gas industry

  • Coordinate and support industry trade meeting engagement and meetings

  • Maintains various departmental dashboards and tracking of deliverables for net zero and other sustainability initiatives

  • Compiles and organizes data for miscellaneous proceedings and needs for the leadership team

  • Review, analyze and summarize complex data to support the development of programs or projects

  • Research and provide market and strategy insights regarding emerging trends in the industry

  • Develop responses to external and internal data requests

  • Produce regular and ad hoc reports to track program and project milestones and updates

  • Develop presentations, reports, graphs, etc. to effectively communicate the Company's strategy and implementation efforts

  • Support projects to track net zero, environmental and other sustainability qualitative and quantitative data

  • Negotiating and implementing department vendor agreements

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree

Related Work Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in project management or related experience, with experience in program management and program analytics; preference for individuals with both project management and critical thinking backgrounds

  • 2+ years of experience in the areas of economic analysis, market intelligence, or data analytics; preference for experience in the sustainability, environmental and ESG space

  • Strong project management and organizational skills to balance multiple responsibilities and tasks in a changing work environment (required)

  • Ability to effectively communicate complex topics both orally and in writing (required)

  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making abilities (required)

  • Demonstrate strong initiative and interpersonal skills (required)

  • Ability to think strategically and creatively

  • Efficient in Microsoft Office and software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

  • Ability to work in a team environment with diverse disciplines and backgrounds

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of sustainability, ESG and energy policy (preferred)

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required:

  • Excellent communication skills - oral, written, and interpersonal required

  • Organizational skills, strategic and analytical thinking skills required

  • Experience managing multiple projects and working with multiple internal and external stakeholders simultaneously required

  • Demonstrated technical aptitude; with the ability to understand and apply that aptitude to natural gas operations

  • Broad understanding of Southern Company Gas operations

  • Technical skills: proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Team, MS PowerPoint.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle information in a sensitive and confidential manner, ability to work well with all levels in the organization.

  • Ability to be self-directed and take a proactive approach to everyday responsibilities

  • Excellent judgment and demonstrated ability to handle business with a high degree of discretion, confidentiality and diplomacy

  • Ability to manage and complete multiple high-priority projects and activities with strict time-sensitive deadlines

  • Ability to prioritize, coordinate and schedule various tasks in a dependable and organized manner with little direction

  • Ability to interface with diplomacy and tact at all levels, including executives, employees, customers and board of directors

Preferred:

  • Skills in business plan development and economic analysis, as well as contractor/consultant management

  • Experience in state regulatory processes, contract negotiation and implementation, and project development

  • Familiar with standards, methodologies, protocols, and calculations for greenhouse gas accounting and environmental sustainability metrics

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Office environment, key boarding (80 - 90%), on-call (0 - 30%)

  • Travel potentially up to 25% of the time, including out-of-state
