The Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) has an opening for an Engineering Project Team Leader in Mossville, IL. In this role, you will ensure the financial success of new engine design and development programs through the management of cost reduction initiatives with the design, purchasing, and manufacturing organizations, as well as tracking and forecasting R&D spend for the programs.

JOB DUTIES:

This role will be a high visibility, high impact role in the Industrial Power Systems Division covering the 7 to 18L Caterpillar engine range. The incumbent will be responsible for leading work across multiple cross-departmental teams to ensure accurate and timely cost roll-ups and reporting for many different target applications for new engine development programs. Teams involved will include business resource teams, many different design teams across multiple organizations, manufacturing teams, and purchasing teams, as well as other supporting teams. As part of the accurate cost roll-ups, this role will work closely with all key engine design teams to ensure alignment in BoM roll-ups supporting internal engine applications, as well as external, 3rd-party customer options. Additionally, this role will also work with these teams to ensure agreed cost targets for component and systems are in place with emphasis on design-led cost reduction, purchasing negotiation targets, and manufacturing cost efficiency targets. As part of the New Product Introduction process, this role will also manage ensure that the program utilizes the correct enterprise tools and tracking to provide accurate reporting and program financial visibility.

In addition to cost tracking, this role will also manage and drive process improvements to ensure accurate forecasting and reporting of R&D investment and spend, as well as supplier tooling and NRE. This will require close collaboration with all key teams driving investment in the program, including design teams, manufacturing, and other supporting organizations.

Interpersonal, leadership, and strong communication skills are required. Significant challenges of this position are working with people: enhancing the team's creativity; facilitating the team's cooperation; clearly communicating the requirements and tasks, while gaining input from the team on refinement of same; translating both verbal and non-verbal information from the customer, management, and team members. Project team leaders are the spokesperson for the team in meetings with multiple levels of management and with the customer. Team leader must develop good networks to enable them to obtain resources and cooperation needed and remove roadblocks so that they can ensure the success of their team. Ever increasing skills in the role-based competencies of Managing Vision & Purpose, Decision Quality, and Negotiating are required.

Project team leaders are accountable for pulling together a team of individuals, who may or may not have worked together before, to solve a technical problem or create critical component(s) and systems or process. Team leaders may or may not select the team and the job/project deadline. Incumbent will be expected to pull input from the whole team to formulate decisions and develop the output for the job/project. Key areas of responsibility encountered in the role of team leader are: plan and manage the job/project; manage the business/financial aspects of the job or project; provide a supportive work environment for the team; mentor, coach, and develop others; and manage one's own development. The team leader will interact with people from diverse technical and cultural backgrounds. Incumbent will work within the team and beyond the team with contractors, hourly, salaried and management employees, suppliers, customers, and individuals working in many Caterpillar organizations.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 4-year technical degree plus 5 years of technical industry experience

  • or a Masters or Doctorate technical degree plus 3 years of technical industry experience

  • Demonstrated business acumen

  • Prior experience in a design-focused organization with exposure to Team Center and BoM management

  • Demonstrated history of high performance in areas of evolving responsibility

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills High attention to detail and organization

  • Proven leadership and ability to influence without direct control
