Senior System Operations Trainer

Description

The Senior System Operations Trainer will provide dedicated training for the System Operations department and will focus on preparing candidates to successfully complete training and certification requirements. This is a highly specialized skill in the natural gas industry. Specialized knowledge is required to train on the following: maintaining and operating the natural gas distribution system regulator stations, emergency valves, station equipment and crane operations. This role directly develops the skills of the resources that sustain and preserve natural gas utility infrastructure integrity and customer safety. This person will be responsible for driving the quality, safety and compliance of System Operation trainees and ensures that those standards are met. This role is also responsible for on-going evaluation and accuracy of training programs providing input on course content. The System Operations trainer is responsible for administering the Operator Qualification evaluations (initial and requalification) for job tasks to ensure alignment with mandated federal guidelines. This role will also conduct certifications to determine if the employee has the knowledge to perform the task. The System Operations Senior Trainer is also responsible for coaching and giving feedback to supervisors in regard to the readiness of the employee to complete task.

Functional Expertise:

  • Develops and maintains the pressure props utilized in the training of the highly skilled System Operations trainees

  • Models adult learning principles as appropriate for varied training environments (instructor-led, video, eLearning, etc.) coupled with strong platform skills.

  • Demonstrates mastery of effective facilitation to engage participants including the use of questioning, listening techniques and interventions that foster a safe learning environment.

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of specific operating areas and gas industry, evaluation methodologies and ability to evaluate learning or performance improvement solution.

Business Acumen:

  • Delivers interactive training programs for new policies, procedures, technology and standards of performance with a strong focus on compliance training (OSHA, DOT, etc.) in relation to System Operations.

  • Understands System Operations business processes and issues and how they relate to on-the-job application.

  • Facilitates and proctors the written and hands-on Operator Qualification evaluations (initial and requalification) and welding/joining qualifications, to ensure employee remains in compliance with the federally mandated guidelines.

  • Strong project management skills.

  • Strong knowledge of System Operations applications used to support the business.

Engagement:

  • Provides feedback to training leadership on curriculum and program development to ensure training effectiveness and provides feedback of leadership/management programs delivered by external vendors.

  • Provides feedback to participants' manager regarding classroom performance and readiness to complete tasks and certifications.

  • Serves as a mentor for other trainers regarding content questions.

  • Works with Training Manager and Training Director to identify and address issues that occur during the delivery of the course.

Driving Results:

  • Responsible for coaching and providing feedback to internal team members and employees to ensure proper and safe procedures are followed.

  • Accountable for ensuring that learning objectives have been met through the training experience.

  • Serves as a Subject Matter Expert for business partners and projects

  • Administer certification program to determine if employees are qualified and certified to the perform the required task for System Operations.

  • Tracking of trainees on the job training as they navigate through the 30/60/90-day post training evaluation periods.

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

  • High School education

Preferred:

  • BA/BS degree in Construction or Engineering

  • Proven Facilitation Skills

  • Certified / Licensed technical or trade skills (crane certification)

Related Work Experience:

Required:

  • 5 years of System Operations Experience, extensive knowledge of systems and work procedures.

  • Knowledge of the natural gas or utility industry

Preferred:

  • Strong project management skills

  • Extensive technical knowledge of field operations procedures and Operator Qualification

  • Technical expertise in various operating areas including natural gas regulation and mechanical joining

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required:

  • Exhibit strong working knowledge of specific operating areas related to the gas industry.

  • Pipeline field operation experience.

  • Professional demeanor, solid written and verbal communication and customer service skills and knowledge of adult learning principals.

  • Exceptional presentation and training delivery/platform skills

  • Excellent facilitation skills in group dynamics

  • Ability to -think on feet- and create relevant business examples to illustrate key training points

  • MS Office Suite - intermediate proficiency

  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally with all levels of a diverse organization

  • Ability to motivate and develop non-direct reports and deliver constructive feedback

  • Able to work well in a team-based setting

  • Able to meet very tight deadlines in a fast-paced consistently changing environment

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional travel required depending on business needs and may require air travel and/or overnight stay for one or more nights

  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds

  • Intermittent use of pneumatic and vibratory tools

  • Ability to withstand loud noises

  • Working on various job sites and excessive driving up to four (4) hours at a time
