What You'll Do Here:

As a Manager of Software Engineering for Cengage's Authoring Enablement team, your time, effort and attention will be divided between people management and project team engineering responsibilities-managing a team of software developers as well as contributing to application development and support. This team supports the services and tools that support authoring assessment content used by Cengage courseware platforms.

Job Duties

As a Functional Manager (coach)

  • Lead a strong and engaged team passionate about delivering quality software.

  • Meet with the product and technology team leads to understand functional & technological needs of the business, and provide guidance on potential solutions.

  • Work with the team to design, architect, and implement new features.

  • Collaborate with internal and enterprise technology teams to design and develop solutions that solve complex business problems.

  • Evolve the technology stack to meet growing demands for high availability and scale in an operationally sound manner.

  • Continuously evaluate the size & staffing of your team to ensure that business objectives are delivered in a predictable & efficient way

  • Support and promote individual professional development and career growth for your team members.

  • Interviewing & hiring new team members, as well as assisting other managers with the assessing of prospective candidates.

As a Team Member (player)

  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of software development and design.

  • Help breakdown, estimate, and commit to the delivery of small increments of work.

  • As appropriate, use a variety of software development techniques (e.g. pair programming, test driven development) to ensure consistently high-quality software.

  • Perform root cause analysis, technology evaluation, and design spikes to define architecture supporting high-quality resilient software and aid in early risk/dependency detection

Skills Needed:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience).

  • Proven experience leading software engineering in an agile environment following a continuous delivery approach.

  • Strong teamwork orientation and the ability to foster collaboration within and across teams.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, while identifying and effectively resolving project issues within a fast-paced environment.

  • Experienced knowledge of various languages and web technologies/frameworks (Java, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, jQuery, etc).

  • Solid understanding of version control systems (Git).

  • Ability to effectively collaborate closely between dev team and business users; presenting technical concepts in language suited to the audience.

  • Creative problem solving skills and ability to communicate and translate feedback, needs and solutions.

  • Must be aware of cultural differences in interactions and in the way work gets done.

  • May require up to 10% travel.

Preferred

  • Previous experience delivering products using Agile development practices (CI/CD, TDD).
