Description

Southern Power's Transmission organization manages interconnection and delivery risks related to acquiring, developing, owning, and operating generation assets. This includes significant regulatory and transmission policy support for the complete life cycle of Southern Power's assets. Responsibilities of the Transmission team include developing and executing strategies for securing and maintaining long-term deliverability from generation assets, conducting due diligence of transmission-related issues for asset acquisitions, developing transmission deliverability and cost assessments for new generation construction, managing the Generator Interconnection process for new assets, supporting FERC regulatory filings for pending and existing assets, managing the customer interface with transmission providers, transmission support for operations and maintenance activities, tracking and participating in transmission policy, forecasting congestion and curtailment to support the financial plan and trading activities and monitoring competitive transmission opportunities.

The engineer/analyst role will support project managers who provide leadership in areas of optimization and hedging, acquisition and development due diligence, O&M support, generator interconnections and transmission/market policy. This role will perform transmission analysis and risk evaluations for securing and maintaining long-term deliverability from Southern Power's generation assets.

This position works closely with various organizations and all levels of Southern Power, so the successful candidate must be able to effectively communicate complex concepts clearly and concisely with diverse audiences. They will also have the opportunity to gain a deep understating of the different wholesale electric market structures while gaining insight into deal making from a transmission diligence perspective.

Major Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Grid Analysis and Nodal Modeling to produce daily forecasts of key nodal and hub prices as well as other ad hoc analysis in support of Commercial Optimization and Trading

  • Provide analysis and communicate with Southern Power traders to procure daily congestion hedging positions and analyze pricing of longer-term transmission congestions products. Identify, track, analyze and communicate key grid outages or other grid conditions that could impact generating assets

  • Asset Acquisition and Development Due Diligence - Review of interconnection and transmission positions and contracts, deliverability, FERC and Transmission Provider requirements, curtailment and congestion outlooks and identify key risks (cost, schedule, contractual or otherwise)

  • Work closely with Business Development, Acquisitions, Project Development, Commercial Optimization and Trading and other organizations to develop potential risk mitigations and solutions

  • O&M Support - Provide operational support to Southern Power's Remote Operations Center, O&M Support team and plant personnel. Provide technical analysis and support for the generating fleet (for example, Transmission Provider requirements, reactive power, power quality and renewable generator ancillary performance)

Candidates with the following preferred qualifications are encouraged to apply:

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field is required

  • An MBA or advanced degree in these areas or related field is desired

Experience

  • Transmission experience is desired but not required.

  • Experience with production cost and dispatch, nodal modeling and load flow analysis is desired.

  • Experience in any of the following is a plus: financial evaluations, complex contract interpretations, real time operations, renewable generation technologies and grid power quality requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of wholesale power markets (such as CAISO, ERCOT, SPP, MISO, PJM), FERC policies and transmission access (transmission service, scheduling, point of delivery, curtailment) is desired.

  • High level of proficiency with Excel, Power BI and other Microsoft Office products is required

  • Strong analytical skills, interpersonal skills, verbal and written communications skills

  • The ability to successfully manage numerous tasks and priorities in a dynamic environment

  • Creative thinking, with a focus on finding optimal solutions to complex issues across various markets, technologies, and contract structures
