As a State Tax Senior Manager (internally known as Tax Manager) in the U.S. Tax Reporting & Analysis group, you will be responsible for U.S. state income tax matters for Caterpillar and its subsidiaries. This position manages the co-sourcing of state income tax returns, oversees the quarterly estimate and provision process, and manages and makes key decisions on state tax audits. The position also researches tax positions and advises on impacts of projects and/or initiatives.

The Chicago, Peoria, IL, or Dallas, TX based position will have in depth knowledge of U.S. state tax matters, including state modifications, nexus, interpretations of U.S. international inclusions between jurisdictions, and complexities of attribute realizability such as net operating losses and credits. As part of this responsibility, the role reviews, interprets, and makes recommendations and decisions with an understanding of the enterprise impact.

Job duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Tax Compliance & Provision Management and Review:

  • Performs both detail and quality reviews for U.S. state income tax modifications, nexus, tax returns, quarterly estimates, and attribute realizability

  • Provides tax expertise on regulatory compliance and reporting requirements

  • Reviews material state income tax positions

  • Audit Management :

  • Leads U.S. Tax Reporting & Analysis team members in responding to information requests, analyzing impacts, and incorporating resolution into other processes for state audits and notices

  • Analyzes technical positions in state tax audit examinations, frequently working with examiners and authorities to resolve disputes

  • Legislative Activity

  • Monitors, analyzes and determines impact of critical proposed U.S. federal and state tax laws and regulations by applying Caterpillar facts

  • Guides U.S. Tax Reporting & Analysis team on modeling impacts of proposed/enacted tax law changes and implementing changes into compliance and provision processes

  • Tax Planning & Special Projects :

  • Applies tax research to optimize enterprise tax effects

  • Originates and sponsors process improvement projects which may modify existing approaches or develop new solutions

  • Understands outcomes and has an enterprise view when resolving issues or advising on projects

  • Team Coaching & Development :

  • Manages team deadlines across the tax calendar and lifecycle

  • Provides guidance and identifies development opportunities for tax staff

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's level degree related to Accounting, and approved certification (CPA/CMA), or equivalent experience in tax or accounting

  • 6+ years of progressively responsible tax related experience at Big 4 public accounting firm and/or large multinational organization

  • 4+ years of tax compliance experience in US state income tax compliance, including nexus review, state modifications, and tax return review.

  • 3+ years of managing state income tax audits, including review of responses and driving to resolution

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to manage a team, multiple projects, and determine prioritization

  • Demonstrate high levels of initiative, good judgment, and superior communication skills

  • Understanding of complexities of US international provisions in state tax matters

  • Collaborative and team-oriented personality with the ability to build and foster relationships with business partners

  • Understanding of accounting and business processes

  • In-depth knowledge of Corptax or One Source for state income tax compliance
