The Role
Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.
This position is for an experienced upper level structural engineer in the A1B Propulsion Plant Planning Yard (PPPY; Department E70) supporting the construction, maintenance, overhaul, and modernization of CVN78 Class aircraft carriers. The successful applicant should have significant experience, managing projects, and an above average problem solving skills related to the construction and maintenance of the Ford Class Steam & Electric Plant structure. The applicant should also have a proven history of resolving complex problems with limited supervision while successfully communicating with management and external customers.
This position should require a high level understanding in structural dynamics and stress analysis processes with an emphasis on the Dynamic Design Analysis Method (DDAM), specifically the shock requirements governed by the CVN 78 Class ship specification and Shock Design Criteria for Surface Ships. Major duties will involve performing complex dynamic structural (shock) analyses utilizing finite element analysis (FEA) methods with the pre-/post-processor FEMAP and ABAQUS/Nastran computer applications, perform hand calculations using textbook methods, develop engineering calculation reports, check structural analyses reports, train junior level engineers on the use of all engineering software, teach correct modeling techniques for shock analysis, develop and review customer submittal letters, support the development and/or resolution of ship alterations (ShipAlts) proces, Nuclear Liaison Inquiry (NLIs), evaluate/analyze lifting and handling plan for Steam & Electric Plant equipment removal/installation, and be able to work independently. Interface with Construction Engineering and Trade's to mitigate fabrication and installation issues associated with CVN 78 Class propulsion plant structures and be able to develop close working relationships with all PPPY engineering and design disciplines as well as all upstream and downstream customers. Work with Design utilizing Team Center workflow process to communicate engineering resolution, approve changes to the product model and drawing reviews. A strong familiar with checking TAs, in addition to training junior engineers is highly desired. Tools utilized include Siemen's TEAMCENTER, FEAMAP, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, MATHCAD and a variety of other engineering and design software applications.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
The candidate should possess a comprehensive understanding of ship construction processes, and significant experience in the area of structural/shock analysis. The candidate shall also have demonstrated the ability to work in teams, and have experience providing oversight of and managing the work performed by junior engineers within a team setting.
