TRUCK OPERATOR/ENTRY LEVEL APPRENTICE POSITION
Job Summary
Truck operator is an entry level position. You will be assisting in the construction of new and used transmission lines that will consist of wood, concrete, and steel structured lines spread statewide through Georgia. This position requires heavy manual labor and weekly travel. Travel expenses and hotel cost are the responsibility of the truck operator and a daily per diem (allowance) will be provided to help cover these costs. The current rate is $125 a day for those employees accruing overnight lodging and working 50 miles from home. This is an item covered by the Memorandum of Agreement between Georgia Power Company and the IBEW Local No. 84. This position is subject to call out, scheduled overtime, and storm restoration work.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent
Candidates who have earned the ELAC (Electrical Line Worker Apprentice Certification) through a technical college is highly desirable
Experience working outdoors in a labor-intensive occupation
Background in commercial driving, equipment operations, or equipment rigging is desired
Commercial driver's license or permit preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Basic knowledge of hand tools and equipment
Ability to read, understand, and follow all procedures, rules, and safety regulations
Ability to work in a team environment
Basic physical strength to perform daily work tasks
Demonstrate the ability to take instruction, directions and translate them into action
Minimum of 1 year of work experience in construction, heavy industrial maintenance, utility, military, and/or electrical experience is preferred
Other Requirements
Must possess a valid driver's license
Must currently have a commercial driver's license or be able to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
Must pass a pre- employment CAST test (basic mechanical aptitude) and Poest Offer Employment Test.
A thorough background check, drug screen including a nicotine test, DOT physical and workers compensation questionnaire will be required prior to employment. Applicants must be tobacco free for 6 months prior to employment
Candidates must be able to work in all weather conditions throughout the year that may include heat, rain, ice, and snow.

Able to work assigned storm duties, which may include nighttime, weekend, holidays, and overnight travels
Because of the nature of the work and weight restrictions on our equipment a candidate must currently weight (and maintain their body weight) below 300lb. fully dressed including steel-toed boots and hard hat.
Training and development
Once a truck operator has completed all the proper requirements they will have the opportunity to bid into an apprentice lineman position. Once in this position he/she will undergo an extensive training program that will include a mixture of classroom and on the job training that will include climbing and working at heights up to but not limited to 200ft. This training program will last approximately 4 years. Upon success of the program you will be able to bid on an Lineman position when available.
Additional Information
This position is covered under the Memorandum of Agreement between Georgia Power Company and the IBEW Local No. 84 which includes an increase every six month until you max out in your job classification and a cost of living increase annually. This position is subject to call-out overtime work, scheduled overtime work, and storm restoration response.
Pay: This is a position covered by the collective bargaining agreement between GPC and IBEW Local 84. Union membership is optional. Current starting pay for ALL NEW HIRES is $4,653.00 /month or approximately $25.64/hour. Truck Operators who receive job offers will be hired at this rate, regardless of experience/skills. This rate is non-negotiable.
