JOB PURPOSE:

To provide support for facility quality initiatives in product quality, supplier quality, manufacturing quality, and materials technology. This position will be a key contributor in the implementation of the Caterpillar Quality Management System (QMS).

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • This role is responsible for championing facility quality programs in adherence with the Caterpillar QMS at a specific facility. This would include execution of Global Quality processes in support of division wide certification and integration of improvement recommendations from these assessments into strategic plans for the Business Unit (BU). This role would be accountable for facilitating BU quality system registrations (ISO9000), submitting BU quality system applications for recognition and coordination of all Continuous Improvement programs.

  • Provides leadership and expertise in setting Quality measures for the BU incentive compensation plan, and reporting progress toward meeting goals.

  • Sponsors and supports CPI/SPQ (Supplier Production Quality System) Projects through 6 sigma black belt resources to execute process and product performance improvements.

  • This incumbent will support the General Manager, Facility Manager and Product Managers in setting quality policies, indicators and promoting quality policies throughout the BU. Ensure the BU quality systems, strategies and plans are linked in a coordinated manner to enable common strategic goals and communicate them in a clear and understandable manner to resources within and supporting the BU objectives. Organizes and facilitates monthly meetings with General Manager, department heads, etc. to share results on Product and Process Quality, Certifications, etc. Sponsor and support quality 6 Sigma projects to execute process and product performance improvements.

  • Provides leadership and support to the calibration team for cost effective maintenance and control of monitoring and measurement device program. As Process Owner, determines ongoing resource needs to maintain the program including salaried, hourly and agency personnel. Supports projects targeting gage reduction and calibration process improvements.

  • Provides leadership to BU teams to provide statistical control, audit and systems support for internal certification. Works with various customer/supplier groups to establish a quality plan, which ensures optimum customer satisfaction, audits plan to provide feedback to the groups on adherence to the plan. Organizes teams, leads and/or participates in solving various problems, determines the root cause of the problem and proposes solutions.

  • Works with team to provide audit and systems support for internal certification. Works with various customer/supplier groups to establish a quality plan, which ensures optimum customer satisfaction, audits plan to provide feedback to the groups on adherence to the plan. Organizes teams, leads and/or participates in solving various problems, determines the root cause of the problem and proposes solutions.

  • Provides leadership needed to develop and implement new quality technologies within the BU. Works with customers to determine the need and develops and implements proposed technologies. Searches for new quality technologies and leads the development and deployment of those which demonstrate high cost/value relationships. Requires extensive research through literature research, seminar participation, discussions with universities or other centers of new technology.

  • The incumbent is responsible for the training, motivation and development of employees. This position instructs personnel on how to determine the quality of work with the aids of inspection gauges and blueprints. The incumbent provides counsel and advice to employees concerning personal and assigned work problems, recommends merit increases for qualified employees, disciplines employees by writing cautions and discharging or suspending employees, and writes commendations for outstanding employees. These are the tools used by the incumbent to motivate people. Personal contact is made daily with each employee relating to quality problems, safety, housekeeping, etc.

  • The position supervises or manages a work unit of management or salaried employees where planning, scheduling, and monitoring and reviewing work of subordinates is required. The position is responsible for all personnel issues and performance evaluation of subordinates.

  • Typical internal customers include employees from many divisions within the facility. External contacts include various customers and suppliers throughout worldwide markets. This position is challenged to carefully evaluate problems and review a large number of possible solutions before selecting an option. Problems may be complex and will require the incumbent to develop solutions. The incumbent is free to determine the best way to complete job assignments in order to achieve desired results. Impacts key quality goals including Customer Satisfaction, Continuous Improvement, Timeliness, Accuracy, Efficiency, Cost Savings, Process Quality, Part Quality, Internal Quality Certification, Class A Certification, etc. The position changes the way work is performed to meet quality goals for the measure(s) stated.

Basic Qualifications:

  • The position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering or manufacturing, and 10+ years of job-related experience OR 20+ years of similar work experience.

  • Detailed knowledge of manufacturing operations and quality disciplines, techniques, tools, and equipment.

  • Strong interpersonal skills needed to develop a cooperative team relationship with others inside and outside the department.

  • Good analytical skills are necessary to identify root causes.

Top Candidates will also have:

  • 6 Sigma experience as a Green Belt or Black Belt

  • MS degree in engineering or Manufacturing

  • Advanced Product Quality Planning experience, engineering, quality or manufacturing background

  • Prior personnel supervisory experience

  • American Society for Quality (ASQ) or global equivalent certification as a Manager of Quality (CMQ), Quality Engineer (CQE), Quality Auditor (CQA), Mechanical Inspector (CMI), or Reliability Engineer (CRE).

  • Location of this position is in Lafayette, IN or Mossville, IL.

  • Travel up to 25% is possible with this role.
