Data Center Facility Operator
JOB SUMMARY:
The Data Center Facility Operator is responsible for the ongoing operation, maintenance, and repair of critical infrastructure systems at Southern Company's facilities. This encompasses a variety of tasks to ensure the optimal functioning of all critical systems that are necessary for the safe and efficient operation of company's facilities, which will include data centers, or other mission critical environments. The primary goal is to maintain high availability and reliability of the facility infrastructure to prevent any potential interruptions to business operations.
REQUIREMENTS:
Educational Qualifications:
Associate degree or certification in mechanical, electrical, or a related engineering field are preferred.
Industry certifications such as CMCO, BICSI, IFMA, or other relevant industry associations.
Experience:
Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in data center operations or a related mission critical role.
Experience with Building Management Systems and automation controls.
Familiarity with OSHA regulations and procedures.
Understanding of data center cabling standards and practices.
Technical Skills:
Basic knowledge of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, LAN/WAN, and firewalls.
Familiarity with server hardware, operating systems, and virtualization technologies.
Proficiency with monitoring systems and diagnostic tools.
Understanding of backup systems, disaster recovery, and data replication processes.
Knowledge of physical IT security best practices.
Strong understanding of HVAC systems, electrical systems, and backup power systems.
Soft Skills:
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, both written and oral.
Ability to work in both a team setting and independently with minimum supervision.
Ability to occasionally work various shifts, nights, weekends, and be on call for emergencies.
Knowledge of industry standards, building codes, and safety regulations.
Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting (50 lbs max), bendng, and standing for extended periods.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Monitor data center infrastructure, environment, and performance to ensure high availability and reliability.
Perform regular system backups and routine audits of systems and software.
Respond to and resolve help desk requests related to data center operations.
Maintain accurate documentation and operational logs.
Coordinate with vendors and contractors for equipment servicing and repairs.
Participate in disaster recovery tests and actual events as necessary.
Assist with capacity planning and the implementation of new solutions.
Provide training and support to junior staff.

Work Location: The work location is in Athens, Georgia (Relocation assistance available)
Physical Demands / Work Environment : Potential to lift equipment such as servers, UPS unit, storage boxes, and computer hardware that could weigh up to 50 lbs. Rack installation and cable management often requires the physical ability to handle tools and hardware at various heights and angles. This may involve bending, stretching, and working in tight spaces or above ceilings. Data centers are controlled environments often kept at cooler temperatures; technicians need to be comfortable working in these conditions and may occasionally be expose to server fans and cooling units.
